  2. Hi all,

The engine is off but not out, realised that my two jacks do not go high enough to lift the vehicle to pull the engine from under (schoolboy error I know but I am a newbie)I will pick up a higher lifting jack in the morning. I will also get a 36mm socket for flywheel nut. Then I will be able to see if it's loose or not. There is certainly movement but doesn't seem to be on the dowels. Then the fun of loosening/ tightening the flywheel nut.

  3. If you can feel any movement in the flywheel something is amiss !!

  4. Hi marct512

That would be useful, I will have to see how I get on without one.
Definitely get something like it for next time. Jk do a flywheel locking tool, doesn't look as good as that but it is quite cheap.

  5. Hi

The flywheel is now off. The seal is going to need replacing. There is even more movement in the shaft now the flywheel is off. The flywheel felt tight getting it off. I used a 4 ft long tube to get it off.
The question is was the problem a loose flywheel or is there another problem inside the engine.
    How do I know?
Do I put a new seal in put the flywheel back on and tighten (how tight should I do it) and see how much play I have in the shaft. If I still have play there's a problem in the engine?

Advise would be appreciated. I sure I'm asking lots of daft questions but if you don't ask I'll never know. I don't want to send it to a garage I want to learn how to do it.

    Thanks

  6. There should be 3 shims behind the flywheel. Are they there? If so pop the flywheel back on and tighten it quite tight. Don't put the seal back in for now its easier to see any movement. Does the flywheel and crank move in and out? If so you have a problem with the main bearing / thrust or the case.

  7. Hi
There are three shims behind the flywheel. I have put the flywheel back on without the seal and tightened quite tight with a bar and pole. There is still play as before in the pulley. If when holding the pulley and moving the flywheel they don't both turn at the same time there is a little movement before the other moves.
I really do hope this isn't an engine strip down job, that may well be beyond my means in knowledge and expense. I have had the vehicle only a few months and although I knew owning a vehicle like this there is always something to sort I was hoping the engine wasn't going to be one of them so soon.

Any further advise would be appreciated.

    Thanks

  8. Your pulley sound like it is loose, they are both bolted to the same lump of metal (crankshaft) so should move together.

Grab the flywheel and try to push it inwards, towards the engine case, then pull it back again, is there any movement there?

  9. Hi

    Yes there is movement in/out.

  10. Behind the flywheel there are the shims (the ones you have ):) behind that they rest against the main bearing that controls the thrust, (movement of the crankshaft in and out) See if that bearing is moving in the case ?

  11. Hi

    I will have a look.

Another thing is if I grab the top and bottom of the flywheel I can wobble it slightly.

  12. Try to tighten it more, it sound like it has come loose. If it has while running it has probably damaged the crankshaft, while the flywheel is off again Try and take a good photo of the end of the crankshaft, the bit with the four little dowels poking out.

  13. Hi

Please see images below of crank end and flywheel.
It is difficult to see play without the flywheel off a I have no leverage.

They do not look worn to me. I am going to fit flywheel back on and tighten it ft.

  14. Have you got the big washer on the gland nut? (The big bolt that holds the flywheel on)

  15. Yes the big washer is on the gland nut.

I have just watched a YouTube video of someone putting their whole body weight on the bar to tighten the gland nut. Is it ok to do that?

  16. Hmm

If you pull on the pulley, there is a slight delay before the flywheel moves?

I hate to say it, but that sounds like your crankshaft has broken into two pieces!!

Time for a strip down dude!!

  17. When you pull/push they move together but when you turn slightly there is a fraction delay.

  18. As a newbie and a moron if I were to offer one piece of advice to other newbie's whether they be morons or not is to not watch a YouTube video and think your an expert. As I have done and snapped the gland nut when trying to tighten it.
Going to get a new one.
