I was born in '63 so was aware of it and it's affects. I am not saying the vaccine is not safe just that any long term effects can't be seen in short term trials. My cousin complained about trying to get approval for something he was working on because it was going to take 10 years of extensive trials (a plant that could possibly cure cancer)
As I say though I will be having it when offered and don't believe some of the rubbish surrounding it.

I only played one gig last year with my band, it was at a caravan park in Norfolk that we play at every year over the August bank holiday, always a fantastic night. It had to be moved outside in the afternoon instead of indoors in the evening and everybody had to sit 2 metres apart with no dancing or singing allowed. There were bar staff serving drinks and chastising anybody who dared to mumble along with a few words. I found the whole experience marmite and was glad to get home. When you play live you rely on the crowd to make the gig work, a bit the crowd at a football match being the "12th man". When they're all sat down with their lips sealed, barely daring to tap their feet it's pretty grim.

Yes, in the end, its already being done though - if you smoke and you turn up likely to die in an operation because of symptoms caused by that smoking, they will ask you to consider stopping smoking to give yourself a chance before they perform the operation.

Rights come with obligations. This is often forgotten.

  7. It's really difficult isn't it. I mean, if you repeatedly crashed your car in to a brick wall, and asked your insurance co to pay for the repairs every time, they'd not put up with that for very long..

Folks who started smoking before there was widespread info about how harmful it was could be forgiven i guess - didn't know it was harmful, now they're addicted etc but i dont' really know how many of these are still alive? Information on poor diet, exercise, smoking etc has been pretty widespread for a long time now. Having a knowingly bad lifestyle and getting a directly related illness and expecting nhs to treat you without question is morally questionable at best? If you're told to fix your diet give up fags and get some exercise by your doc, and you choose not to, why should the taxpayer continue to fund treatment for something that could have been entirely prevented?

  8. On that basis you'd then have to consider all sorts of things as "entirely preventable". What about those who drive old buses with poor (almost non-existent) crash protection, would you not treat on the basis that the benefits of airbags, side impact beams have been known for years and hence you shouldn't be driving old vans. Or what about those that go mountaineering, cycling, sailing all manner of things. Be careful what you wish for, because your proposal leads away from a service free at point of delivery, which is one of the leading principles of the NHS.

  9. i think we're agreeing - as above i said its difficult - there's an argument both for and against. entirely agree with your sentiment here ^

interestingly if you go on holiday (remember that) and you pay for insurance, it won't cover you if you do dangerous sports, you have to pay extra if you want cover for snowboarding etc. maybe the future is a tiered system where we all get a standard level but to go beyond that you have to make a contribution? not saying it's right, just trying to think how things might evolve in the future.

  10. The term 'difficult decision/issue' is often used when people propose things that suit them whilst knowing it to be unsuitable for other people !!!!

  11. Dont we already contribute? What you're talking about is an insurance based health service, which has no benefit for and excludes the poorest in society. I think people need to be careful that we don't drift into a more American system.

I dont smoke but I believe that the tax revenue from cigarette sales more than covers the cost to the NHS. Obesity related disease and the cost of treatment given the significant number of people involved is going to be a massive challenge in the coming years.

  12. If everybody started living healthily and within their means, the consumer economy that we have become reliant on would collapse......
