Case code and clutch size

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by paradox, Aug 8, 2014.

  1. So i could have my flywheel machined out to fit a larger clutch?

  2. No... if you have a close look at it the surface the the friction disc runs on dips as it comes to the outer edge... dust casting groove I should imagine!!

Bit strange that you're struggling to find a 215 flywheel... I know I have one on the shelf... Have you tried the guy near you that builds engines?

  3. Cheers paul

Ive not started looking yet i just wanted to find out what case code and size of flywheel i needed

  4. An AD or AS case should do you nicely. Gone are the days when you could just buy a new one for a reasonable price - newies are horrifically expensive these days...

  5. Yeah thats very true ive just looked at the price of a new case on coolair:eek:
You used to be able to pick a good second hand turnkey up for a few hundred quid
It seems those days have long gone

  6. Unfortunately it's due to the fact that new cases are no longer vw logo'd... Even though they are manufactured in the same place...

Another one of those disinformation price hikes

  7. For what its worth, my 1976 bus is fitted with an AF series engine, which is "tropicalised" for use as a Nigerian Taxi.
"Evil Ben" ordered a new standard clutch for it as part of the resto. programme, only to find that it required a larger diameter unit.
It wasn't a problem as the larger item was available off the shelf.

  8. Well, bless my socks. Took a look today at a 200mm job I've got and indeed the "dust dip" would stop you widening the friction plate area out. Which makes me wonder...have I still got a 215mm on my van...

  9. I did the same last night

Am i strange in getting great joy at actually holding in my hands and seeing what we are talking about?

Im Marmitee with spelling and my number work needs a second going over which are both negatives
Yet if you shove a lump of oily/rusty old iron in my hands it makes sense to me once ive cleaned it off

  10. No, you're not weird para. I regard folk who don't do stuff with their hands with the deepest suspicion. They're not normal.

Checked my flywheel today, and couldn't resist cleaning his teeth with a wire brush in a drill. I then wire brushed a Beetle starter motor that I have absolutely no intention of using, ever. Something soothing about refurbishing stuff..:)

Yep, but you could also pick up a decent bus for a couple of £k!

  15. Is that yours steve?
    Hows the build going

  16. Very true

Not mine. I'll phrase this carefully. That's Vege making a flywheel that you can fit a 200mm clutch to, from a 180mm flywheel.

  18. Are they the ones that always line bore to the max?

  19. Hmm... So now you have a wear groove that'll put a ridge on the friction disc, and no groove for dust casting at the outer edge.... That's just silly o_O

When VW stopped production in Germany, it seems VG bought a lot of engine making tools. Hence the good name. Nobody else could compete for quality machining which is what engine remanufacture is all about.
    Agreed. Pointless.
