Case code and clutch size

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by paradox, Aug 8, 2014.

  1. What case code should a 1600 tp bus case have for a 1978 year
Also what flywheel and clutch should it have?

  2. Mines a 78, and had an AS and 215mm clutch from the factory. The flywheel's the same as earlier ADs.

  3. Cheers guys:thumbsup:
Is the AD code engine also a bus case?

  4. Yeah

  5. I've just had a new fly fitted and was told that the 215mm was no longer available so had a 200mm fitted instead. I'm told it makes no difference!

  6. My van drove ok with the 200mm flywheel and smaller clutch
But id hate to get bogged down in mud and the clutch start to slip
I think the weight of a bus over a bug justifys the larger flywheel and clutch

  7. I'm told that the 215mm was only fitted to later buses. The mechanic who fitted mine runs a 80 bhp 1600 in his prototype bay with a 200mm and says its fine. He's been working on aircooled vdubs for years and I trust he knows his stuff.

  8. Had a 200mm in my camper since '92 when a rebuilt engine was put in, not noticed any issues, if a 215 flywheel turned up I'd be tempted to change it though.

  9. Given a choice it would be the larger one but it seems there isn't an option.

  10. Cheers for the input guys i didnt realise they were yet another holy grail type part

  11. Most places sell the 215mm clutches o_O.

Can think of any great differences between an AD and AS case, apart from the AS having 8mm head studs in case savers, while the AD had 10mm jobs straight into the case.

  12. I think its the flywheel that folk are saying aint available?

  13. Just seen that Heritage list them as a special order item.

  14. Yes, clutches easy to get, flywheel not so easy.

  15. Just fitted a 200 clutch on my '75 1600 but you probably wont know until you get the old one off ...
    :hattip:

  16. Isn't the flywheel the same?

  17. 200 mm flywheel with 215 mm clutch
    Im confuzzled

  18. Is the 200mm not the diameter of the clutch friction plate, not the flywheel (I'm not going down to the garage to check ;))?

  19. All of the flywheels have the same outer diameter, they just have different recess diameters for the clutch!!
