You could always sleeve the cable at that point with some split conduit Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
They are sold all around the world and sold as being safe with safety measures thrown in. Sounds like belt and two pairs of braces to me. Fair enough, no offence meant.
yes sold all around the world for tents and awnings not a metal box http://www.towsure.com/camping-site-mains-supply-unit-3-outlet?nosto=productpage-nosto-2
With safety features in built to cut supply if dangerous. Driving the van feels more dangerous to me!
Seems fine but not been on a long run yet. We're off camping at the weekend, but not too far away in case anything goes BANG! I'm sure it'll be fine @Justin Pyfrom , we had used the portable hook up in the past, plenty of times, but wanted to install a permanent hook up, because it looks neater to me, and because of the poss issues re safety....mostly I just want things neat and tidy though, hence not putting the mains inlet in the engine bay
The safety features in built (rcd) will do nothing if the metal work of the van becomes live due to the cable becoming damaged it only offers protection from faulty equipment thats plugged in to it. By having it fixed with a earth wire going from the metal of the van to the earth terminal on the rcd it will switch off if the vans body becomes live At the end of the day putting 230v in a camper is about as bad as you can get as such its has its own section in the electrical regs along with things like swimming pools
thats a bit like having a gun that may or may not have a bullet in it the thing to remember is its not just you at risk its others around you that may come into contact with the van and the ground
No it isn't, not even slightly. I'd go with the analogy that it's like fuel hose that isn't checked but the fuel hose is far more likely to perish and harder to inspect. If looked after and inspected regularly it will be fine but if used often one built in would be much better. (bored at airport waiting for plane)
Now that we're on the issue of being unsafe... don't wear a baggy long sleeve T shirt while under the van with a drill, as I did two weeks ago drilling holes for the 240 hook up on my Son in laws T5 when the drill bit caught and decided to wrap around the fabric and burn itself through to the bicep muscleSo be careful out there ! I havent contributed to this as theres always some knob jockey who knows absolutely naff all about it and wants to tell time served qualified electricians and engineers that they dont know hat they are on about. Apologies to the OP but this happens every time.
If it was aimed at me, 1. Bit harsh. 2. I wasn't telling anyone anything was just enquiring. 3. I was correct in any case (they have to be damaged to be unsafe - like the vast majority of sold things in the world ranging from drinking glasses through to the brakes on our vans). In concluded with 1. Me agreeing if you are going to use hook up often then getting one installed would best option. 2. Op stating the other reasons for doing so. 3. Other folk saying they do both. So if anything @Dicky you are the knob jockey in this thread for two reasons. I'll let you work it out.
If that's your attitude just use a normal extension lead or just some wet string it will still work Please warn us when you go camping and will can keep clear
Chill out folks! This is a really useful and important thread. Full respect to the sparkies. On that note, how should I fix the earth from the consumer box to the body work? Should I weld a nut to the wheelarch and then fix the earth wire with a bolt?
