Using the kit supplied from JK I am installing hook up in the bus, just plain mains hook up for campsites, no leisure battery/split charger involved. This is where I'm going to locate the consumer unit...

And going to put the mains inlet somewhere on here...

This is in front on the rear jacking point, my plan was to secure it with self tappers.

So, a couple of questions, with the consumer unit where it will be, am I ok to fix the earth to the wheel arch next to it?

And which is the best way of/ location for, making a hole in the floor for the mains wire from the Consumer Unit to the mains inlet? From the top or from below?

I am not an electrician in any way shape or form, but I will be following the instructions that came with the unit.

    Cheers in advance.

    You mean this one

I drill the hole from above as its easyer
Drill a small hole first then you can double check you have it in the right place then drill the hole big enough not forgetting to use a grommet or better a cable gland

The earth needs to go to good Metal as close the the box as you can

  5. I ran my cable through into the engine bay , saves grovelling around on wet ground when connecting up .

Cheers Matty, so would the wheel arch as shown be ok if I'm putting the consumer unit where I plan to put it, and should I clear a patch down to bare metal or is it ok going on top of the paint. I have grommets in various sizes too.

I have seen this done, but I don't mind wet knees and I think it looks tidier with the inlet underneath . Just personal pref of course.

  8. will the bed shut.?

Yes. I know it doesn't look like it but the bracket clears the consumer unit comfortably. I had to move it over to do so though.

  10. Mine has the inlet socket there too - put in by PO - a few seconds to connect up and no wet knees with a plastic bag.

a lot do but you do run the risk of damaging the cable with the engine lid along with it being near hot engine and petrol

  12. mines on the rear corner. thought about moving it somewhere more discreet when I eventually repair that area but its so easy to connect up where it is!

  13. Great place where you have it in the pic, scrape a little paint off with a screw driver where you will be fitting the earth cable. It's tidy as the wiring just drops down outside for the inlet, close to the consumer unit then the 3 point plug can go happily on the front of the rock n roll seat fascia and the wire neatly secured on the inside edge. :)

  16. Why don't people just get the portable type? Saves drilling holes in your van!

  17. @Jack Tatty how is the engine?

Sorry for my lack of electrical input!

  18. That's a simple solution but it's a camper not a tent

    because its dangerous

Your van is a metal box insulated on each corner (tyres) if a fault occurs the metal work may become live and you won’t know until you step onto the damp grass while still holding the van BANG !!

The van metal parts must be earthed within the van
The leads with a socket and RCD on a lead and passed through the window DONOT comply as if there is a fault the metal could become live and still not trigger the RCD and are for tents and awanings.
