@Dicky that was a very informative write up thank you. I've done my ehu based on Matty's advice here and I've used duel pole ??? Circuit breakers in the consumer unit. Mainly, it must be said, cos I was told by that they were safer. Are they better because they trip on live and negative faults and therefore almost foolproof?
Bang on and up to date. Dual pole are the current spec and yes they complete the belt and braces approach!
If you want to use a portable hookup in a camper, you have to wear one of these all the time it's plugged in
Would it help to take an earth wire from the van body to a metal tent peg stuck in moist ground to create a local earth for the van in case the ehu earth is defective?
Transitioned mine from my temporary solution to its permenant home under the RnR today. All working fine and no one has died so far........
Just an observation. Wouldn't it be useful to make a sticky of people or garages that will do a van set up for you? Everyone's offering good sound advice but some folk aren't competent with doing the job themselves and it doesn't seem like there's anywhere to get the job done. I've tried and no one's interested.
Its difficult to achieve a fully compliant installation with no departures from the regulations on a vehicle where people dont want any external indication that its there. Such as, mains inlet. Its not really compliant under the bus where people mostly put them. Regardless of whether your actually installin what people want they will still come back at you if theres and issue and that was the cause of it. I thought about it as a sideline but dont thinks people would be willing to pay what it actually cost!
so is it any different to having mods done inside a caravan, for example? Am I right in thinking that caravans have to be certificated for their electrical safety? What's the difference, apart from an engine?
I had this problem at a site in Denmark. I use a plug in tester and always test for polarity and earth at every stop. I also always test the RCBO. Danish plugs are unlike most of Europe and the site lent me an adapter but my tester showed an earth fault. I pushed a screwdriver into the ground and wired it to the body and this cured it. I still have the original type Schuko hook up socket and twin cartridge fuses fitted by Westfalia but with new wiring and RCBO.
Probably that most caravans already have it fitted and that ... its a caravan so no ones that bothered if its got a great big flap on the side!
