A restoration for Iris

  1. Hope you have lots of scotch pads to key that lot up before topcoat

I’m still working my way through the 10m roll of scotch that I bought!
On the underside I went with 240 grit and scotch on the fiddly bits which seemed to work well.

I’m hoping I’ll be getting the rear torsion bar etc back on at the weekend. I marked the bar and spring plate with a Dremel so I’ll have no issues getting that back together, but I foolishly marked the spring plate to body with a pen which has obviously gone.

Is there an easy way of setting stock height using a specific reference point on the van? Failing that I’ll set it from scratch as described in Bentleys.

Got the torsion bars and steering damper painted too (signal green for the torsion bars, traffic red for the damper to match the Koni shocks as best as possible):

A really productive night this evening. Finishing prepping the rest of the running gear and got everything top coated in Anthracite Grey (an old beetle colour that should look awesome with the neptune blue).

You’ll be running the risk that this is too nice to drive when you’ve finished! :)

I took them to one of my local powder coat shops, PowderTec in Poole. They did 5 wheels and 4 backing plates blasted and coated for £210 which I thought was pretty reasonable.

Thanks for the kind offer but I believe I’m sorted for a spare set now which Paneuropaul is picking up for me.

Thanks, it’s great getting stuff into paint! I’m still learning as I go but the basics aren’t too difficult. As with all of this stuff I tend to go for the “if anyone else could do it, why couldn’t I” attitude.

Ditto ... it's too long a haul with welding for me but paint should suit me fine with the right kit ... and attention to what other people say about where they went wrong!
I was quoted £300 for the works on five wheels so, yes, I think you you did well there :hattip:

Hoping to have all the running gear back on by the weekend.

  19. Looking good James, did the beam need a lot of coaxing to slide over the chassis rails? I have read tis a tight fit especially with a few coats of new paint and its easy to jamb.

Surprisingly not! I lashed it to my creeper then stuck it on a trolley jack and it went pretty much straight in. Nice when things are easy for a change.
