Wow Looks like mine did when I got it but mine was a runner - just Keep us posted What is the round thing on the bottom that looks like it has wires or pipes coming off it
Engine oil pre-heater for those super icy mornings Looks like the engine hasn't run in a very long time!!
Spare hour this afternoon, the barrels needed some heavy persuasion to part company with the pistons. Think they're all totally knackered, had to hit the piston tops quite hard to break the grip of the rust or they might just have been salvageable. Bottom end seems ok at the mo, need to get the pistons off in the morning so it's easier to spin and look inside, I know the experts will say might aswell split the case now it's this far. Think the heads will survive with new valves? So what's the availability of 2.0ltr barrels and pistons like?
You can get everything that you ever need for a type 4... apart from tinware New set of valves, and valve springs... the valve seats might need a clean up with a valve seat grinder too... you'll have to see what they look like when you get the valves out of the heads!! And yes, full strip down is needed, even if it is to just clean the gunk out of the sump!!
the pistons and barrels are scrap, the heads look like they need a good clean a the valves reseating, though your no David bailey with the camera, so hard to be 100%
Small amount of progress today, Splitting the case with my homemade tool Quite encouraged, much better condition than the last one I did Less sure about this cam lobe
Cam is normal dude They are machined like that to help the lifter rotate in the bore... gives you even wear and a low likelihood of a lifter jamming in the bore
Thought I'd look at what panels I'll be needing, had a good poke around Outer sill obvious but inner just localised flange area which I'll fabricate Both front outriggers, jacking points plus a bit of top hat renewal of previous dodgy repairs One front outer arch/step Other than that just bits of localised repairs, I want to retain as much original metal as poss. Screen corners and front panel excellent.
Only a small area of load bed actually perforated, lots of heavy surface rust all over but it is a 34yr old pickup. Rear outriggers both sound. New filler hose needed but access a breeze on these.
Time to bump this up and start making some progress. Engine bits boxed up and off to the father in laws for cleaning in his paraffin bath. He's keen to help with the engine so starting by cleaning and measuring wear on everything for me. My first task is to move the shed then build a new bigger one with double doors so I can at least get front or back end of the bus in to work on, that should take a couple of weeks. I'm going to do at least one job a day on it however small and post it up here so I've got an incentive to keep momentum up.
Not exactly pickup progress, though I did pump the tyres up. Built a small retaining wall to level the ground up so I can move the existing shed down on to it. Then realised the bad smell outside wasn't in fact the neighbours drains but ours that were blocked so spent an hour sorting them out and cleaning up.
