Hi all. driving the van back home today and just as i get 100 yards it starts to sound awful. i have had a look around and cannot see anything obvious but i am no expert in fact i haven't a clue. Can you please have a look at the video below and advise. I am a little worried! Thank you in advance.
Dose sound like somthing catching inside the fan housing Do you keep a rag in the engine bay for checking the oil? If so go and check if your rag is still there
I think if it was something bad the engine would be jumping around a bit. So hard to tell anthing from the vid.
Hi all, Just took the belt off and it still sounds the same. Trying not to run it for to long as I don't want to do more damage. It's difficult to say where it's coming from engine, gearbox? You would of thought it would be bouncing about with the noise but cannot see anything. Don't know if this is related but when I was out in it the gearstick seemed to be abit more rattly than usual but that may be me, don't want to throw a red herring to confuse. Any more advise would be appreciated. Thanks
Hi all The belt is off and there is a little bit of endplay on the shaft. I haven't checked the valve clearances yet as I have no new gaskets to put on. I am told that I would need new gaskets before opening the rocker cover. Thanks
Well you're not driving it until you've sussed the noise... I'd get the covers off to check... Likely as not they won't leak, but it is good practice to replace them
Hi all Took the rocker covers off. The rh side (stood behind vehicle) was wet with oil, the lh side I had to put a pan under as there was a leak of oil. Not a huge amount but enough. Does that mean anything to worry about? The end float is a little concerning but I may be paranoid and trying to think the worst but when I purchased the vehicle about two months ago that was one of the first things I checked and there was no end float now I'm checking and there is quite a bit in my opinion but I don't know what is good or bad. I will try and take a video of the play. Thanks
hi see below video of end float. what are your thoughts. to much i think. Would that be causing the noise of the engine? I am just in the process of checking valve clearances. will update shortley.
Hi Valve cleanses seem ok. It is the first time I have checked valve clearances but I think I was doing it right.
That's a lot of end float, the noise seems loud on the video, the engine isn't shaking about, it's not the fan/alternator and you've checked the tappets. I'd go for flywheel has come loose like areksilverfish suggested.Perhaps it was loose but sitting square when parked up but the starter knocked itout of kilter. You're going to have to take the engine out because you've now covered all you can with it installed. If it's not flywheel/clutch related it might be you big ends have disintegrated but you would have noticed that before you switched off when it was still "good".
A little bit of oil in the rocker covers is normal!! You'd see if there was anything majorly wrong... I'd say at this stage, it's either time to get someone who knows engines to have a look, or pull it and strip it to see what has gone wrong!!
Hi Zed, I had a feeling it might be going that way, not ideal as a newbie. the engine out wasn't exactly on the top of the list first time jobs. I'm still getting used to checking oil every time I make a journey. Hi Paul, the sensible thing is to get someone who knows what there doing to have look at the engine. But I think when you own these types of vehicle you have to learn to repair yourself or you would never see your vehicle it would always be at the garage. Well if anyone has a hints and tips of how to remove engine, all comments welcome. I have a look at a few YouTube videos so will start my training. Am I best getting ramps to reverse up on or is it best on the ground. Thanks
