Sandybay - er I expected them to replace the spring with a gas strut in the same guide, and no I wouldn't fancy internal struts either! Razzyh, I'm not going to summer camp so i'll ppal £15 for 6 of them and pm you my address. I'm not sure I need any but as sandybay says, if i don't have any I will! cheers
Razzyh.....................so that's why my pop top is more of a push and grunt top !!!! Presume the rollers go in the slots in the X mechanism.....I just have bolts with a piece of copper pipe to reduce friction ( restorers bodge it would seem. ) I have e-mailed Gday Kombies and was even going to go and see them to try and buy the whole mechanisms as I am getting too old to get it up ( pop top I mean ) and the wife just disappears while I sort it on site. Presume I would need 12.......can you supply ? Cheers.
sANDYbAY...I have an Australian import, which came over with a pop top just strapped to the roof. I always thought mine was a Sopru, but my lifting mechanism is flat like the Breha ones on the Aussie site and not tubular like yours. Also my roof sides don't have a lower section in the middle like yours.......I'm guessing mine isn't a Sopru...but that's the only Australian conversion I am aware of. You say GdayKombies use gas struts inside, I presume that's instead of the X lifters. Have you spoken to them, as they don't seem quick to answer e-mails ?
I only know of the sopru conversion as well, but then I don't know if I'd recognise a Danbury or a Westfaliure either. When I spoke to them on the phone they described the gas struts as an X shape inside the van at the front and rear of the top. From what they were saying it sounds like a poor solution which is why I insisted that the insurers rebuilt mine. It was a complete faf about though and I ended up having a local bus seat manufacturer make all the new poles. For you it may well pay to get Terrordales onto the case and just accept that the postage may be high.
Must admit that gas struts would make life easier.......my old girl is a bit of a Heinz 57 as I think that in all its years in Australia, it never had a pop top.....just got shipped over with an old one strapped to it, so I have no " originality " to lose. I got her to have a solid base for a restoration. Will give GDayKombis a call and see what costs are involved. Cheers for reply.
Just to add another bit I saw a Brazil van at the weekend and this has gas struts in a "V" formation inside. Didn't like it either
Went to see the guy at Gday Kombis who to be fair wasn't any help....gas struts only work on his own tops and he had no bits that would help me fix my own. He said that he had stopped importing from Australia as it was becoming too expensive. Must say that he had plenty of vans in, but if he does charge £ 30k plus, then as a customer I would have hoped for a better showroom / workshop !! What I need is a contact in Australia to assist in the quest for parts.......as Mr Clarkson says, how hard can it be !!!
Anybody ever find a source of these ? I'm in need of one new spring. Had a slight poptop malfunction last week
Hey guys, I live in Adelaide and I'll be back in Scotland later this year visiting my parents if you can wait until about August? Or if you need them sooner I can get them sent to me and I'll forward them on
Thanks for the offers - I'm trying a repair first but I think getting hold of spares makes sense in the long run
@bernjb56 Let me know if you find these? I don't need any now but a few spares could be useful and may reduce shipping costs slightly?
