  1. who been on the sauce this week para lol do what u want to do , it s ur time and efford , owen nw

  2. ive seen some really good finishes with the rustoleum paint rollered then flat and polished. i think its a good idea if you have no where to spray a van or have never sprayed before i would rather flat and polish the roller effect of rustoleum than the Marmite that can be blown about and get in the paint by spraying and the the long runs if you have never sprayed before. using rustoleum would be a labour of love i wouldnt want to be doing loads of vans in it. and if you have the equipment and can spray it would be the better option but not everyone has.

I think its a pretty good idea, I have seen a lot of paint jobs and inspected them etc, I have seen spray jobs that look like a bucket of sand and paint was thrown at something and brush painted stuff as shiny as glass, its all in the prep the laying down of the paint and refinishing after. Mr paradox, just to make it a bit more appealing is there any reason why you wouldn't use 2k paint ? I did my garage floor with 2 k and a roller (door open etc and a mask) you wont have the same airbourne issues as with spraying so a carbon filter mask would be fine, 2 k takes approx. 8-12 hours to cure unbaked whereas baked at 65degrees is around 20-40 mins, its a chemical process so it will always cure an oven is merely for speed and convenience, you can also have any colour matched :), do you not have an old bit of steel hanging around that you could paint to show a sample of what is achievable :). personally I prefer brush painting as the paint is thicker and on old bits of steel like suspension etc it can hide some of the smaller imperfections whereas spraying highlights everything. prep prep and more prep

  4. Cheers davidoft

I can achieve a better finish with enamel paint and a roller than i could with 2k
Its the way the enamel paint flows out and self levels
When you see it being applied and then the brush or roller marks flow out to leave a flat shiny finish its really impressive

As for old bits of steel to show whats achievable just look at my tinware etc in my resto thread:thumbsup:

  5. I have to agree with para a good finish can be made from roller painting and brush painting I personally am doing my van in rustoleum and have in the past had a car re sprayed in a booth with all prep done as it should and it was not as good as my roller paint .
If you take your time and do it right then it can be done , my van has had this stuff rolled , brushed and spray painted and I bet it's better than some back street 600 pound spray job .
If you want to do it mate carry on me personally I would not do it as a service to people but will agree that the results can be good
    This is sprayed [IMG]
    This is rolled one coat

  6. And I've hand painted 2k primer and top coat worked well too

  7. Sure it will fine from a distance!
Think anyone is mad if your going paint your bay window with a roller or a paint brush!
2k spray painted in a heated room always best! And if someone can t spray painted better than what someone else has rolled on they should nt be spraying!
Granted a good spray job will cost you a lot of money but that because of the work that goes into it!
If you get offered a paid job for £600 then you know it's gonna be crap! That would just about material costs!
Sorry for the rant everyone but can't believe someone would do this??

  8. Well I've done it and am happy with it I carnt afford a full on spray job or I would pay someone to do it ,
Fact is its doable and if you seem Half the busses out there all be it they would not look like a couple of grand spray jobs but how would you tell the difference if its shines !
Personal preference in the end I think

  9. Is it because of the paint people don't agree or the way it's applied , lets day you could roller 2k and have well good paint jobs would this make people think twice !

It's the paint (spirit based) and the number of coats, the drying times and the sanding.
2K flows nicely, If I were rollering I'd give that a go with slow hardner.

  11. See I was looking into that , adding some sort of hardener but would not like to get it wrong and it blow up lol but is it doable I have some 2k primer and top coat could I use hardener from them !
And before anyone says it the 2k is black and I'm not painting my bus with it ;)

  12. It's because I restore campers for living and I know what it's like to rub down previous poor paint jobs! All you ll be doing Is creating more work for a pro to sort out in future for you!
If you ve done it and your happy with it then great :) but if you ve just spent a fortune on having new panels welded in then this the last thing you want to do it!! If you want your bay to worth money then save up for a proper re spray.

for me, its because we have access to an air compressor with a dried supply, a high volume storage tank and a supply more than adequate to keep the required air flowing to the spray gun!

  14. would a full rattle can paint job not be better that a roller?

I imagine you could use holts £5 rattle cans.. buy 3 get one free at my local ;)

if you get 1 primer, 1 colour and 1 laquer each time. about 25 cans of each? 75x£5= £375.
would that not be a better alternative to roller enamel?

Funny you should say that, A mate of mine said I should have bunged hardner in with some spirit based paint when I painted the inside of a pop-top. I think it would be fine - you try it first though. ;)

you use a lot more rattle cans than you think, probably 100 cans and the paint is really really soft and stays soft, hardener cant be added to any old paint its only added to the correct type of paint to complete the chemical make up

  17. Hmmmm I may try it lol and see what happens :/

If I was to save up a load of money to get a good paint job I'd end up spending it else were I know what your saying but my bus is built for me if the next owner wants a full paint job after then they should think about the work when buying mine , I'm not out to destroy my van but I can only do as much as I can .
    I take your points though

    You reckon?
When I painted PMACs bus roof inside I got some spirit based white paint. It was very bright, so I toned it down by spraying a mix-up can of mango green into it. It didn't want to mix, but I kept stirring as I painted. You wouldn't think you could do that either?

I think the gauntlet is down! Er...over to you baybug...
