Your working day. What's it like?

  1. I'm a web designer. I sit behind a desk all day, when I'm not sitting at my desk, I'm sitting in meetings. Then I sit in traffic.

    Long day?

  4. I'm a web developer / consultant but went self employed ten years ago and work from home 99% of the time. I have actually been based in a normal office for a couple of longer term contracts in that time to get some cash but much prefer the work life balance of being able to choose when to work and be around to drop and pick up my kids.

I try to work standard office hours but being a geek working into the small hours of the morning once in a while isn't an issue but reckon I average about 45 hours per week at my desk which I am actually looking to reduce with other more interesting stuff

  5. In to work about 8am. Then a succession of teenagers of varying degrees of enthusiasm and maturity pass through my doors and I try to get them to pass exams in drama, Latin and sometimes though not at the moment English. And then I do rehearsals and possibly sports coaching (cricket). I meet parents, help sixth formers to plan their futures, apply to universities, drama schools or whatever. I also have a theatre to run, which involves planning the year's events, overseeing budgets, health and safety etc. I get to leave work at perhaps 7 pm some days, by about five on other days. Bath the kids, put them to bed, then mark essays, plan work for the next day or just flop. Sometimes I get to go in the garage and work on the van... Do this six days a week including Saturdays and several Sundays, but I get the holidays!
It's a great job. I get to work with young people and see them develop in confidence and maturity. And I get to be creative every day as well as getting to mutter cynically over a mug of coffee in the staff common room. Can't fault it too much.

  6. Similar to Fil6, unless WFH.

Up at 0530, cycle to station about 6am, Train into Waterloo, Bus to old street (avoiding the Hellhole that is Bank in rush hour), at work for about 0745.

Work = IT stuff related to SMS messages. Mostly staring at a screen working out why they aren't arriving as they should. We play a lot of table tennis too. It's a great team and atmosphere and we have a laugh.

Leave office any time from 1700 on... bus to Waterloo, Train home, arrive home 2 hours after leaving work (give or take).

    Eat
    Sleep
    Repeat.

WFH involves getting up at 0755, working until lunch, walking the dog, working until about 1700, then enjoying the extra time. TBH as long as the work is done they aren't fussy about how long I take to do it or when I work. I work from home at least a couple of days every week and have plans to WFH from my camper more often. :)

  7. Pays the bills.

the rest goes on the camper

She's not asked for that yet but one never knows the future.

  12. The fact you have to rake, means there's scope for such style changes.

Do you have a set working day?

  19. Varies dependant on what's needed. Office hours are from 8.30 to about 5.30 but usually don't leave in term time till about 6:30 after that its call outs (unpaid) and some admin from home. Recently I've been having a lie in and going in for 9 but will be back to normal after next week. I used to start about 7:15 am and leave about 8pm. I now have a life and a better team working for me!! I only live about 2 miles from work so its not soo bad. If I had hours of travelling to do then id rather work in a shop!
