And just because your wiring is shagged, doesn't mean anyone else's is.
I'm surprised at you Mike, bodging in a relay instead of fixing the actual problem.
On second thoughts, no, I'm not. :)

Its that unobtanium switch... and the relay was a side effect of using the 99 delay relay.

  5. Btw this was our temporary fix, engineered by my 15 yo whilst sat in a field in rural north Wales

using only the parts we have with us and the basic tools we carry on a camping trip, glove box out and mole clamp on to the mechanism, and you have a neat solution that allows about a 30 degree sweep of the wipers which can be operated from the passenger seat :)

  10. okey dokey - yes i can do that

  11. They're just barrel crimps. I don't particularly like them, but they do the job. Get a cheap ratchet crimper from ebay.

  12. Are there instructions somewhere that cover fitting this motor and the wiring?

  13. yes, if you buy the loom and bracket that @snotty makes he’ll send you the full instructions.

  14. Thanks, have started a conversation with Snotty

  15. Why don’t you like them rich?

  16. ok, lubrication - i'm assuming the spindles should have something oily, 3in1 or similar?

what about the ball jointy things - they are sticky and gummed up with old grease. i'll clean them up but what should i be using to lubricate these? More oil? or some sort of grease?

  17. Smear of grease? Worth taking the spindles out and scrubbing the crust off them.

  18. Just a bit ugly. Crimp up ok with a ratchet crimper that crushes the cable bit down to give some strain relief.

My wipers have decided to join in the fun on this thread by retiring early. At least they have a sense of humour, after our first camping trip, it poured down on the way home, and so the first time I’ve used them I found two speeds, dead slow and exactly the same.
A few hundred yards from home they stopped altogether. I can hear the motor still working but there’s no movement in the linkage, so am I right in thinking the gear has stripped? Do I need to remove the dash to get at the mechanism? Excuse my ignorance, it’s the first time I’ve seen a VW wiper mechanism never mind tried to fix one.

  20. Sounds like they all fail the same way. You were lucky yours broke close to home, mine failed 200ish miles from home, in Wales, where it rains quite a lot..

glove box out gives you all the access you need
