Wipers noW wipey!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by rob.e, Aug 24, 2022.

  1. Sat in a field on Anglesea, heavy use of the wipers yesterday no issues (it’s Wales, so rain is to be expected) but today they’ve decided they don’t want to work any more..

switch is fine, I have power to the motor and it’s running, wipers will swivel back and forth correctly if they are folded away from the screen (no resistance) so all the linkages seem to be in place, but if they’re on the glass there’s no movement. I’m assuming it’s stripped the teeth off the big cog thing inside the motor mechanism.

I’ve got a mole clamp fixed on to the horizontal bar so my passenger can move the wipers back and forth just enough for emergency screen wipes, although will plan the drive home to oxford to avoid any forecast rain..

I’m guessing the fix is a new motor? Are the Brazilian ones ok or should I search out a good used German one?

Most likely it isnt the teeth stripped, but the drive shaft rotating in the gear.

There may be enough space in there to do a creative DIY repair, cross drilling the shaft and making a slot for a drive pin in the plastic gear for instance.

Mine has cracks appearing but has held on so far.

Try and find some Rainex as a temp coating for your windscreen...it works well and you might not need the wipers on your journey home. Local car spares/Halford etc should have it.

  4. Likely the big cog has stripped off the motor shaft. Can you hear the motor running even though the wipers aren't moving?

Decent replacement motors are readily available for about £20 (@Mark Darby and I have been discussing this a lot recently :)). I'll post details later.

  16. Prob the most common failure? The wipers are stiff, or get jammed...and it strips the cog off its shaft.

  20. Thanks yes I’d already picked some up before I posted, it’s great stuff. Drove home from nr holyhead to oxford yesterday, rainex doing its thing plus my lad pulled the wiper arm back and forth a few times manually when it was really heavy, but tbh most of the time the rainex is enough provided you’re going quick ish.

my daughter now refers to him now as “wiper-monkey”

off to Devon tomorrow, forecast sunny all week - [back to the future voice] where we’re doing we don’t need wipers..
