My dads 68 Austin 1800 had yellow plastic plates, so that's what I have on my 68. :) Trend setter. O0

"All vehicles manufactured after 1 January 1973 must display number plates of reflex-reflecting material, white at the front and yellow at the rear, with black characters. This type of reflecting plate was permitted as an option from 1968: many vehicles first registered before 1973 may therefore carry the white/yellow reflective plates and, where they were first registered during or after 1968, they may have carried such plates since new."

  2. I'm ashamed to say I've got modern plates with the EU stars (although in the light of recent events, I may saw that bit off :) )

As Joker said, I don't think the rozzers are very conversant with years-of-van...whereas they would be with an old Golf. As long as they can read them.

  3. Cops aren't going to bother themselves with an 'L' reg van with black/silver plates - it would take a really picky cop whose wife had just left him for his best mate the day before to be bothered to PNC you for the date of registration to differentiate between a '72 'L' and a '73 'L' registered vehicle.

ANPR doesn't care what colour the plates are - as long as the font is readable, it'll read it.

  8. Got pulled last month in Sheffield in Amanda's car. Spaced letters. AC5 4LYS. We had normal lettering but the 4 was moved over 11mm. (my little girl is called Alys . £60 fine.

He did confirm that black and white/silver plates are allowed upto sept 1973.

  9. I'm going black and silver anyway and mine is a jan 73, like it's been said I don't think they will pull a 73 bay with them plates on spaced as they should be .
I've been done for wrong plate twice on a mk2 golf 30 pound each time
And the one copper said he could not read black and silver plates on his in car computer ?
I said what if my car was legal for these plates and it got stolen then drove past you , you would not be able to read the plate !
His mate just looked at him and shook his head lol

  16. my mate has black letters stuck on front the chrome bumper of his bug. 14 years never been pulled, straight through mot every year. And on the back of his panel, letters stuck on the tailgate, where the plate would be.
