What engine please????

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by willster, Sep 27, 2016.

  1. Thanks - yep only want to do this once. My existing 3 rib pops out of 1st gear, so needs some attention before fitting T4 or upgrading existing T1. The 6 rib can probably wait until later with the T4 option.

  2. Right, bit the bullet and have acquired a turn-key (all the tin, engine bar mount etc) 2.0 ltr type 4 engine (CJ code) to replace my 1584cc Type 1 engine. Going to keep the existing 3-rib gearbox for now and fit the type 4 to it at the weekend and see how it runs as is for a while.

    As I understand it:

    1) The type 4 should fit straight into my 1979 T2's engine bay? Possible mod to the existing air filter stand?
    2) Fuel line will need re-routing?
    3) Longer gearbox input shaft will be required?

Is the above correct, anything I've missed?

I'll also change the oil, spark plugs...etc..before fitting. Anything else I should definitely service whilst the engine is out???

    Appreciate anyone's thoughts......thanks.

It ‘should’ fit straight into the engine bay; the type 4 was fitted as standard to many buses. The throttle cable will probably need to be changed – what carbs do you have? If they’re the factory carbs you won’t need the air-filter stand. Fuel lines and wiring for the carbs and alternator will need to be modified.

Check and adjust the valve clearance before fitting the engine.

  4. If you get the EMPI pattern throttle cable it is extra long (sticks out the back of the engine hatch until you cut to length) and so covers any eventuality.

  5. Change the oil when fitted will be easier :)

Alternatively you could get the correct throttle cable.

  7. Thanks, yep factory carbs. Is the air filter stand just an annoyance as it gets in the way and that's why it should be removed, or will it literally stop the T4 from being fitted?

  8. That's really helpful, I'll look into this.

  9. Is that from ebay, or I he correct cable readily available from the usual suppliers??

  10. Point taken!

  11. The list for fitting (servicing points aside) the type 4 into the T2 engine bay, replacing the T1, includes;

    1) Mod to the existing air filter stand.
    2) Fuel line will need re-routing.
    3) Longer gearbox input shaft (as keeping existing 3-rib with type 4 engine).
    4) Universal throttle cable.
    5) Mod wiring for carbs and alternator.

Really helpful so far, anything else that's needed??? I want to do this in one hit!!

  12. You will need stronger muscles than you had when taking the old one out :)

  15. Think I'm clear now of the T4 to T1 swap and fitting involved...thanks for feedback.

Re servicing the type 4 before running in - anyone have any views, beyond changing the oil and spark plugs, what else would be worthwhile doing?? Westy 77 has suggsted 'check and adjust the valve clearance before fitting the engine'.... worth replacing gaskets and seals also???

Replace the rocker cover gaskets if you adjust the tappet clearances before fitting the engine, and you’d be daft not to. Front and rear seals are easy enough to change but where will you stop? What’s the history of the engine you’re going to fit? You mention running it in so has it been overhauled? If it has overhauled what’s been renewed?

I’ve never fitted an engine to anything that I haven’t completely rebuilt and upgraded, but that’s just me.

  17. Will adjust the tappets so will replace covers and f/r seals also. Engine has come straight from a running late bay (unfortunately chap promised the 6-rib gearbox elsewhere), as owner had built himself a 1776cc T1 - fancied a change. Engine has good compression etc. Not been overhauled. Plan is to fit it straight into the van, after a basic service and once able to, I'll have it rebuilt as 'stock' (poss 2056cc).

  18. I would change the flywheel oil seal. Be a bugger if it leaked once fitted.
