What engine please????

  1. Our 2lt CJ / CU combination rebuild is stock all the way, apart from electronic ignition and swivel feet rockers.. just cleaned up and serviced the old solexes, I'm sticking to 60 most of the time at 3000rpm (ish) it doesn't really seem to care about hills so far..I do have a 6 rib tho luckily..only got new cam and bearings as it was apart and don't know what worn looks like the rest was all measured and came in ok according to Bentley so was reused. Heads refreshed with valves and guides.. probably even did more than needed.

  2. Yes from a couple of engine manufactures/suppliers! I'd read elsewhere they can create an engine flat spot when idle.

  4. When I started researching all the engine info, have to say its pretty bewildering - like a kid in a sweet shop!! Easy to lose sight of what your realistic needs are and budget! Its been suggested that a stock 2Lt T4 will deliver over 40 hp more than the stock 1.6L Type 1 and apparently if well tuned may produce 100 hp??? If correct that's pretty good considering the cost comparison.

Our 1915 type 4 (1800 case, 96 x 66 pistons and barrels) chucks out a healthy 96bhp at the flywheel. Drives very nicely :)

It's not about horse power, it's about torque. Try and get a ride in a 2l powered bus and see what you think.

    Has it worked 4 U

  8. Will do thanks

  9. With no vacuum advance they run too retarded at light throttle. Less economy and more heat.

  10. Good luck with your upgrade plans. So many options and to be honest a few of them will work pretty good. I absolutely agree with @zedders comment regarding torque. One of the nice things about type 4's is they have that. Mine was an 1800 and is now a mild 2056 and in both forms it did and does hills pretty well. As an 1800 I have done most of the Lakeland passes fully laden with a bike rack on the back no problem at all. Now its a 2056 it will do 70 up long motorway drags. Interestingly the issue I have is that the cooling is what limits it now as its stock. I could do 80mph on the flat but it would overheat after a while (and its noisy at that speed). It does 65mph all day long over and up slopes too.

I suspect that a decent T1 1776 with good carbs would be equally good. Not sure a 1641 would be much of an upgrade. Thing is some of the options in this thread will cost a wedge. How much are you expecting to spend?

I too run a 2 ltr Subaru on a 3 rib. With big tyres on 15inch T4 wheels the revs in 4th are pretty much the same as a 6 rib box

It is a pity that when you break a T4 engine you end up paying the kind of prices that buy a serious upgrade to a T1 just for stock parts.

T4 engines are stronger and better but we all headscratched at Techenders over a professionally rebuilt T4 engine that had cost three times as much to rebuild as my driveway special . Professional time and parts .. £1800 for a T4 vs my £600 parts for a DIY T1 rebuild.
The professional rebuild was running as hot at idle (100C) . as my T1 would cruising at 65 on a flat road.
And the problem seemed not be in the cylinder heads (mixture / compression) but deep inside. A lot of money for no improvement.
If you get one that is running OK then no problem .. Some are good some are not so good. Some people have done well with a basic recon T4 for £1000.

T1 s maybe weaker design but cheaper to buy , cheaper to upgrade , cheaper to fix.

This was kind of my point about researching your engine builder...
The problem is with forums, people recommend people they've never used and have no experience of.

Go stock, rebuild it yourself if it needs, get the parts assessed and machined if needed by an engine builder. That's what I'd do because even if you get recommendations pointing you at a particular builder you'll likely have a long wait.

  15. As lot of people reckon that the Type 4 tends to run hot at idle with stock timing as it improves emissions. Don't know how much BS that it, but mine runs way better at idle with more advance than stock.

  20. Thanks. My budget is around £2,000-£2,500 and now having looked into it, I've had quotes ranging from £1,000 for the most basic 'refurb' of a T1 (parts and labour) to £6,999.00 for a reconditioned T1 with various upgrades, twin carbs, exhaust pack, electronic ignition etc etc and various in-between. I do like the T4 swap as an option with 6 rib gearbox - seems possible at £1,700 for both (second hand). I'm waiting on machining / assessment quotes from a couple of local engineering firms. Therefore, this T4 stock option with a degree of refurb should be there or there abouts on budget. Upgrading to 1776cc re T1 doesn't seem an option to get the increased power/torque that I'm after within the budget I have.
