what a load of nonsense

  1. Re Spain and expats. My neighbour's mate lives in Spain with his English lady friend and it seems since Brexit went live, they can only now live in Spain for 90 days at a time and have to return to the UK for 90 days and then back to live in Spain again. It seems to be a residence visa issue which is difficult to get as the rules are strict. His lady friend has residency but he hasn't. Spain now seems not to welcome British expats and even clamping down on expats with British cars. His lady friend bought a Spanish registered car to avoid local hassle.

  2. There was plenty enough time for him to get residency or at the very least a NLV,
There are plenty of uk residents trying to live under the radar in Spain atm,
Yes they are clamping down on uk registered cars, anyone who is trying to live in Spain for more than 180 days with uk registered car run the risk of having it taken by Tráfico
They should have had it registered in Spain and also they should of changed their driving license to a Spanish one also,
They were given plenty enough time to sort out their affairs ,
Good I say hook them out and send them back to Blighty

  3. I agree, the expats saw it coming and did nothing about it. They can sell up their villas and apartments and move back here and buy a bedsit. I thought it a bit rich when the neighbour's mate and his lady came back here to get their Covid jabs, stayed a bit and went back to Spain.

It's similar in Portugal, our Scottish relatives had got some sort of residency that allows them to stay as long as they like, but he has ended up buying a Portugal registered car, because using a UK ( GB) registered one was becoming too much of a hassle.

One of our local pub landlords shut up shop and went to Grand Canaria for a year with his girlfriend as it was cheaper and better living even after renting an apartment. He has an Irish passport so can stay for as long as he likes but she has a UK passport so was supposed to come home after 90 days. When her time was up they went to see the local Mayor and explained how they were enjoying living there and spending money there and he said "no problem, sign these residency forms and she can stay as long as she likes and keep spending her money here". Not defending Brexit but I think it's all a matter of speaking to the right people and saying the right things.

  15. Possible as long as they stay in Spain or go to Ireland,
It’s a little different now coming and going between the Schengen countries and UK
They are stamping and scanning passports now
and another little Brexit bombshell is the ETIAS visa or European Tourist information authorisation system
If this comes in at end 2022 another €7 per person to travel to EUo_O
The days of staying in Uk for holidays is increasingly more likely now .

  16. Have you seen the prices of UK holidays...

  20. It is.

Got a friend who bought a wreck in the hills of southern Spain.

Everything he's had done, the swimming pool, a bigger electricity supply, even the wrought iron window bars, have been done (on the advice of another expat) by the local fixer, who, for a cut, gets the respective officials, mayor etc to wander up, have a drink, take their cut, give their nod and everything gets done.

Fair play to him, its looking nice out there, but I'd be worried about them land/property grabbing in the years to come......
