He already static timed it and it idles too fast so why do that again when the result was over advanced i.e. the max will also be over advanced.
The mech advance can and does stick, nobody was talking about the vac advance as we all know it hasn't got one.
The advice you're giving here is not great in the circumstances. You seem to base it on what has happened to you personally or you are just waffling generalities on the subject - sorry but you do not have enough experience- once a mech advance is worn and sticks, oil will not cure it nor will stripping it down, cleaning, reassembly and oil.

Bit of an update, so started it up this morning, really low idle, tweaked the distributor a bit to increase and run fine for 1 hrs 20 mins at varying speeds up some steep hills, Oil temp rose to 100-108 ish outside temp 28degrees

Visited some caves had lunch 2hrs
Restarted very high idle again, tweaked to bring it down , didn't run great , when going down hill was pinking? I think outside temp now 34 degrees

Drove another 1hr to another town still looking for a timing light turned off high idle again,

It has also be running on a bit when turning off the key engine still runs for a second and a slight wiff of petrol in the engine bay ,

We are leaving tomorrow for our slow drive back,

I presume the static timing is now out the window

  3. Stick to timing it statically. If it's pinking and running on, implies you're running hot, which isn't good.

Should I retime it statically to 7.5 btdc @ no1

What if it doesn't run correctly?

  5. The timing marks on the pulley refer to no 1.

Yes that's fine it's marked at 7.5 btdc , I made a test light from an indicator bulb and some wire the other day , just checking, test light lead to coil with condenser wire, earth the bulb , turn dizzy until light just comes on , tighten dizzy job done ,

Funny how I'm now questioning things I know how to do ,

  7. That's correct. You reach a point of madness when you've tried everything. I'd advise against trying to solve problems by tweaking ignition timing. Your engine sounds like it's running bloody hot, which isn't good. Set it static, anc look elsewhere.

Got any air leaks anywhere? Only thing I can think of.

I don't think so but I will check I will see if I can pick up a can of wd40 tomorrow ,

I know the 009 is meant to be timed with a gun at 3k+ rpm but I'm trying to buy one

  9. A 009 is statically timed at 7.5*, just like the other distributors. Checking max advance is what you're doing with the gun, but if the dissy advance is working ok you can forget sbout it for the time being

When it's cold it will idle much more slowly. e.g. mine 450rpm but 900 once warmed up. Normal with no chokes.
Can't pink down hill. Pinking will only happen under load - the more load the worse it would get, particularly at low revs. More likely unburnt fuel popping in the exhaust.

The popping noise downhill is the mixture going so lean it doesnt burn in the cylinders but lights up oocasionally in the exhaust.. its not damaging the engine, as you may also notice the oil temperature dropping.

Can be a sign the idle jets are blocked, fuel level lower than usual. But if its like my progressive, it happens sometimes on a long hill where your foot is off the accelerator for a few minutes. You are just maybe noticing what has always been going on..but in the UK it was so cold you had the windows shut which mutes the lean popping..

Ok sorry for the late update,

On Sunday morning I reset the dizzy to 7.5 btdc, drove awful , after about 1/2 hour I pulled over and decided to refit the original svda with the 009 condenser, ran even worse , so I refitted the 009 again and low and behold she ran fine , idle was not overly high but the oil temp was still quite high , we decided to head home and made it the 8hrs to calais with a few stops ,

What I did notice twice whilst in the queue for the tunnel at idle was the idle rose and fell a few times , so possible air leak?

We had 2 days in folkstone and arrived home yesterday, we preferred to breakdown in the UK rather than France,

    But all went well,

Best place to buy and make of ignition parts

    Thanks for everyone's help AGAIN

  13. very happy with my 123 distributor, not cheap but very good quality.

I have met an SVDA which was so gunged up the advance was sticking as the lubrication between the inner shaft and the rotating outer sleeve was gone.. oiling it thoroughly washed out old brown oil.

But then again I like buying the £20-30 SVDAs that look like no hope cases, then working on them.. its why I have three working distributors made out of six I bought in various states of knackered .

I did that twice when I was a garage, I even dismantled them and cleaned thoroughly but both times within a few days they were sticking again. I can't remember the exact details it was 12+ years ago but something other than the actual shafts was worn such that bits that shouldn't make contact were. It was unsolveable so at that point rather than waste my customers money on my time failing to fix them I changed tack and fitted cheapy accuspark distributors that back then were actually ok!
I've seen your pictures of dizzy bits and frankly they look like junk to me. :) The cam lobes are all so scored your points are not going to get you far. OK if you fitted elec ignition, but then as we know it's just different pain waiting for you. I'd get yourself a 123 and be done with it. You personally would have fun with a programmable one I reckon - a match made in heaven for a tweaker such as yourself.
And a pair of dells of course. ;)

Yes, that was a distributor I had originally used with an electronic module, and switched out the module a few months back for points, at which point it stopped messing around so I kept using it.. mostly forgetting that one was pretty worn.

So I swapped the central shaft on that for another with no wear, decent weights, springs and little plastic bobbins at the end of the springs. Seems to be OK today at 68mph ..

On the subject of pre detonation and running on, an engine well filled with red hot carbon deposits from over rich mixture can also do this without excessive timing advance because it becomes a glow plug ignition/hot bulb style engine.

I thought I would ask this question on the tail end of this thread , save starting a whole new thread as it is kind of related

I have purchased a ssp vacuum advance distributor with electronic ignition
    See pics

I didn't come with ang instructions so I was wondering if,
    Do I static time it @ 7.5btdc

Once that done do I have to fiddle about with it using a strobe light

On a jk video it shows timing at 3500 rpm but that's an 034 with electronic ignition, I'm not sure what mines called

    Thanks 20220729_151405.jpg 20220729_151439.jpg 20220729_151454.jpg
