The van was running fine yesterday 1600 tp twin 34ict carbs , we made if to campsite after a 5hr drive saw oil temps of 120 for long periods but arrived safely

Went out this morning got 2km from the campsite and started kangarooing, no response from throttle, cut out , restarted briefly backfiring, cuts out now hard to start and impossible to drive ,

I'm stuck on the side of a country lane , i have limited tools , anyone have an idea what I can try ,

    Thanks in advance

Sounds like fueling. Did you run the tank down to almost empty? What does the fuel filter look like?

  3. Are you running points?

    Yes

    Malpassi fuel king

  6. Whip the dizzy cap off & check the points gap hasn’t closed up. If you have no feeler blades with you the gap is roughly the thickness of a fag packet.
If it’s starting ok though but no power & kangaroos it’s more likely fuel supply. Whip the fuel hose off of one of the carbs & check for fuel/pressure.

    Marzydj and redgaz like this.

You recently fitted those carbs IIRC. I would check the carb to manifold to head nuts are all still tight and check the adjustable bits of your linkage for loose lock nuts.
As well as all those suggestions ^.

  8. As Zed says check the carb linkage. If the carb balance goes out it can cause backfire & lack of power/ throttle response

I checked the points gap and it was a bit tight so readjusted and it started at idled, as I started to drive away , kangaroo and very little throttle response

I'm back on the campsite now and will give it all a check over as suggested

Does anyone know Merv, used to own bus monkeys?

  10. Glad it was enough to get you off the side of the road!

Can you whip the airfilter(s) off easy and check throttle pedal is operating both flaps correctly and in sync?

Check the balance pipe hasn’t come off one of the manifolds

Ok as a update, balance pipe is still connected, all nuts and bolts are tight, points gap set at 16 thou , starts and idles nicely , under load hesitates and lurches, goes a bit then holds back ,

    When i say underload I mean 5mph

Could it be a blocked jet,

Now you have re set the points gap, you also re set the timing.
Re-time it to 7.5 degrees BTDC, you know , put the engine at 7.5 BTDC and then rotate the distributor back and forwards with a light bulb across the points from coil negative to ground.
When the light comes on, thats about right.

Mine re-timed itself to about 10 degrees ATDC and then wouldnt start when the plastic follower on the points wore down quite quickly in warm weather ..

Static timing done and still no better, it runs and idles great , lurches when accelerating but still undrivable,

I have fuel going to the carbs could it be a blocked jet in one of them , if so which one

Could it also be valve clearances , but I would have to wait till the morning for it to be stone cold before I check them

  16. Have you checked the carb butterflies are opening together & they haven’t gone out of adjustment? Can you see fuel squirting into the carbs from the accelerator jets when you open the throttle?

Yes they are both working in unison,

The slightest touch or the acc and I'm getting a good strong squirt of fuel

All done with engine not running

  18. Does the engine rev up cleanly when opening the throttle with no load on it? If so it’s possible the coil is breaking down. Have you got a spare to swap it out? Another possibility would be the condenser.

    Zed and rob.e like this.
  19. Could it be fuel starvation then? Perhaps enough fuel to idle but not enough to actually run under load? You haven’t got a partially block fuel filter have you?

I had a Citroen van that did exactly this with a blocked diesel filter. Ticked over fine. Would drive almost normally at low revs. Ran like a dog as soon as you applied even medium pedal.

    I did ask.
