Ahhh ok, that makes sense! Ive only done the valve gaps on ours, we have all of the tin in place, the only thing we are missing is the thermostat but we have the remote oil cooler

Do it first, then put the exhaust on or you'll be doing the exhaust twice.
It honestly is a very straightforward job. Feel free to call me as you go if you want - 07775 853875.
Something always goes wrong for all of us on these old ladies. Are your exhaust studs ok for instance?

the exhaust studs all stayed in situ in the heads, the nuts all came off easily i see no problem there apart from locating the copper oval seals (i have the exhaust that goes into the head not the flush fitting)

  6. If its legal and its a runner if put back together its an easy job if its a drive in drive out( ie on a known running bus without ignition or fuel issues)Happy do it on my drive if you want to

  8. See your point - ie you need to have the exchangers off to fit the tin! Forgotten that!

just use some expanding foam and newspaper to fill in for the tinware, if it holds bodies and chassis together it'll be awesome on tinware!

  10. So whats currently off the engine?

I think I share your outlook on this situation, with a bit more knowledge, confidence and time you'll be fine... My engine is currently stripped to short block and I've had sleepless night about it... (but I do have time in my side!)

Ive been merrily going about cleaning and painting the ancillaries for a fortnight and amassing the parts to rebuild. I've been reading more and just thinking things through and mentally rebuilding the parts I've removed.

This evening I've been considering splitting the case and going the whole hog and checking the shafts, tolerances and play etc. been gaining confidence without even rebuilding anything!

It will no doubt go tits up when I start rebuilding but for now I reckon you may do worse than thinking through the basic description above, check the torque settings, the correct order for tightening the bolts, cross patterns and all that before you start, followed by adjusting the valve clearances etc. You'll be doing 0-60 off the industrial estate like you've nicked it in a few hours time ;)

As I understand it they are well engineered and complicated in design but relatively simple in terms of build, rebuild and maintenance!

    Good luck!!

(ps the Bentley manual is very good if you can get your hands on it)

  18. just a pointer guys, Ricky really needs help on this, so all jokes aside if anyone can offer genuine help to him please do. My offer to him his still there but i've got my balls in a sling and I doubt i'll be match ready by the week-end. Which is a bummer as I really wanted to help.

So, take the mick (I do) but realise that for Ricky its not so simple and he's not a confident wrench monkey. In fact, I've seen him holding a spanner and he's like one of them little monkeys who sit there chucking Marmites at each other - only he's a 6' 6" version
    :)
