Guys i wouldn't ask if i wasn't stuck but i have a problem. As some of you know i have the van inside at work which was for routine stuff over winter and general tidying up, however due to my posting of pictures it was deduced i have missing tinware below the engine and above the push rods (i now have the tin) and also the thermostat is missing presumed jammed open in the full cooling position (this will need checking as i do not have these parts so it will need to be left open if so) Joker offered to come over one day and help but we have not been able to sort a date as yet and i've been told the van has to be out by 8th March which is a Thursday, this means that i only have 2 weekends left to try to get it done, Tomorrow i am not available so it leaves Sunday and next weekend or at a push a weekday if i book it off work, i'm therefore asking if anyone with decent knowledge of the procedure of removing the rockers and pushrods plus tubes etc etc and the re setting up of anyhing we disturb like valves or tappets or whatever could help me, please don't offer if you only have a little knowledge but a haynes manual, this needs to be done once and done right or i'm in the doo-doo....if you know what to do but you have broke your arms but can tell me what to do i'll fetch you and do all the work but i need back up, i'm not a confident mechanic 1st time but i will try anything if someone competent is on hand. I have all parts and the van is inside and it's dry and warm, the van is on ramps and access is good, i can pick you up and take you home, i can provide a bed for the night if you want a weekend at it or to go out for a beer etc......i can even give you the eqivalent time in labour to dig your garden or whatever you want, hell if you're that way inclined i'll even pay you. here is a picture of the engine bottom i should add it's a type 4 2 litre engine with i presume hydraulic tappets? The van is currently in Cannock WS12 postcode. p.m me for more detail or my phone number. please only reply if you're genuine you can do this and thanks for reading. Rick.
dont think i'l be able to get over. Is the bus road legal? Is it running and you just want to do the tins? 2 litre air coolled T25- yes?
It's an easy job mate, really. The rockers are held on by two nuts, remove them and the retaining wire and lift the whole rocker bar out. The pushrods and tubes just pull out. If your replacing the seals on the tubes remember which way you pulled them out, green goes closest to the engine. If the pushrods feel like flimsy metal you've probably got normal tappets. If it is steel? Then you have hydraulic which won't need adjusting. Put everything back in the same order, the wire is a little tricky. It is there to hold the pushrods up. A little bit of oil on the seals to help push them in, tap them home with a socket. The tinware is fairly obvious where it needs to go. Honestly if you follow the Haynes manual it is simple. Adjusting the tappets is straight forward too, you'll need a feeler gauge, a flat head screw driver and a 10mm? Spanner. There is a guide on here. Simples. Should be done in an hour.
bodyrock, while i'm sure you are right and when done i will probably agree there was nothing to panic about, i must repeat - if it does go tits up i'm in the doo-doo, therefore i would feel a lot better if someone was there to oversee, sorry if this makes me sound likea wuss but i can't get stuck with it in a million pieces where it is.
If you arent confident why not do your other jobs as fitting the undertins isnt a reliant on your other jobs. Have you previously had it running? I know very little about FI and wouldnt be confident starting with a non-runner.
Rick, if you are struggling, drop Fish (Doug) a quick PM, he'll get you sorted with the confidence it'll be right
Ricky dude i think your over stressing about it all It ran fine before didnt it? Get your other jobs finished off and leave the tin for now(Youve done many miles without it so far) Take the bus home then you can sort the tinware with help at a later more suitable time What we dont know and fully understand is quite scary but some times we just have to take the bull by the horns and give it a go
The order things get done on these old busses does seem silly but thats the way it has to be done sometimes
Wind back two clicks Rick, what do you need to take the pushrod tubes out for, I'm confused about this part!
