When you've built, installed and tuned your new engine. Or gone T4 or Subaru in which case I'll watch.

I've found that with a type 4, you need to have pretty much everything there (tins, ancillaries, etc etc) and in good order else the costs start stacking up.

I'm building a 1915 from an 1800 and in hindsight I'd have been better off buying a more complete motor than a case minus heads and tins. The costs are stacking up but with great care I think it will be worth it!

Quite a lot for a guess!! I wouldn't be surprised if ~100 mph was a good estimate for gold.

  4. I better get a move on then....

  5. Not gonna bleat on about subaru just cos ive got one but ive seen people on forums stating they've spent 1500 to 2k on complete home install inc donor car maybe less. Depends on your skill level and if you want to stay aircooled I guess.

If a few of us went I'd give it a go just to see if it got close to a sticker.
I really have no idea how quick sub 18 seconds is.
I couldn't care less what others do either. The "buy a T5" crowd do bore me though.

  7. I did look into the type 4 route first but not having the engine or tins and the skills to build myself, I priced the type 4 big bore engine at a similar/ more expensive than the scooby

  8. 195 bhp from a 1603 cc type 1:eek:

Yeh, but it would stall in a bay and be useless on the road. A good experiment and advert for the builder though - he seems to be at the top of this particular game.

I agree, I paid a passing visit to Jason at Dubs and Classics last week, he has an early 120bhp? low mileage subaru to install in his bus, it's cost him approx nothing so far after scrapping the car so he just needs to install/make/buy the rest of the bits. But he has a workshop, no time frame and the skills to do it. He also has a Beetle rolling pan with a V8 and some other car plonked on top that looks interesting - sounds very nice.

  11. Many moons ago when I was tuning my lambrettas the old guy in my local scooter shop asked me what I'd done to it. After proudly describing the oversize rebore, filled crank stage 4 tune, larger engine sprocket, close ratio gearbox, Amal power jet carb, bug bore reverse cone exhaust, hydraulic disc conversion, blah blah. His response was, "if you want to go fast get a motorbike". After persevering for another 10 years or so I took his tuning advice and replaced all of the standard lambretta parts with standard Kawasaki parts and experienced and output increase of over 100bhp and a 0 to 60 time reduction of around 12 seconds with the tops speed increasing by about 70 mph. I also found I could now bounce down the road at significantly higher speeds with a pain increase of over 100%.

If you want trouble free motoring with increased output then stick a type 4 in it. If you convinced that the scoobie conversion is reliable and sustainable then do that. If you like fettling with motors and aren't that bothered about breaking down then get a tuned motor. If money isn't an object and you want vow power with reliability then I believe a breathed on type 4 is the thing to have.

@WoodyLubber (coz he has one too) If you go T1, I'm not sure I'd recommend a serpentine pulley, they seem to cause more troubles than they cure (if they really cure anything!), but having forked out another £200 for that it's staying and really that's the only reason. One downside is adding very high rev bearings (the tensioner) that wouldn't have been there. I've had to replace the bearings in this after I'd guess no more than 5,000 miles. It also hit the case and pee'd oil out that a standrad one instantly cured (while I sorted out the serpentine one). All in all 1/10 and that's for the bling - which I didn't really want anyway!

I can only add that if it's tinkering fun you want, going T1 is MUCH cheaper for parts, some would say just as well! Find me a set of T4 BP's for £150 or a pair of performance heads for £415!

Still silly money for what they are though. Cheaper faster cars are available, but that's not so amusing as flooring it in a battered old breadloaf from the 1960's, then going sedately camping. Best of both worlds IMO. :)

It's not quite enough increased output though. :D

I usually cruise quite fast in mine and it would make sense to have something in there that was happier at motorway speeds. That said standard motorway speed is currently 50 in these parts!

I'm hoping mine will be happy at 70-ish. After the previous top long cruising speed of 60, 70 seems really fast. :)

Obviously, the weight is an issue, so add in 3,300 lbs for a Westy and you need 270 BHP for 14 seconds with 97 mph terminal. I would say that with a VW van gearbox, the shift time is going to give you a problem as well, because it's so slow. Not even mentioning the aero and the soggy suspension.

The calculator says 150 BHP is 17 seconds, so maybe allowing for the gear change and aero, that might get under 18 in a camper.

An empty van or pick up would be so much easier.
