So a Question of Sport has finally been buried but what other longrunning BBC TV shows should be axed ? My personal choice is Mrs Brown's boys , Mastermind , Pointless , Eastenders , Casualty and Holby .
Doubtful they would bury that one but the way the world works nowadays you never know ! I do like to catch up on the news but do find it very depressing at the minute .
yes to Mrs Browns Boys… it’s a suitable euphemism for a number 2 by name and by nature. Holby has already gone… hoping Casualty will follow, but it’s starting again this evening I don’t mind the game shows, at least Pointless and Mastermind aren’t full of giveaway questions! now, I could quite happily see the end of I’m (apparently) a Celebrity, Britains (apparently) got Talent, the ice skating one, possibly Strictly, singing competitions…. adverts. Wouldn’t TV be better without the adverts!! however, surely having a few rubbish programmes on the TV is a good nudge to go and do something better?!
It does a number 2 a big disservice calling it that…..it’s literally the least funny ‘comedy’ on TV If satellite and streamed content has done one thing, it’s highlighted how utterly garbage many of the TV shows with tens of millions of audiences at their prime were. Comedy, by its alignment to the zeitgeist rarely stands the test of time but stuff like Bread, Some Mothers Do Have’em and The Brittas Empire are beyond crap. I guess it bubbles all the brilliant shows like David Attenborough, Yes Minister and Porridge to the surface.
Okay i think Mastermind is a keeper and agree with all of your other choices .Modern adverts should be abolished and bring back ones from the 70s please
David Attenborough can do no wrong in my eyes ! Remember rubbish like Blind date , Blankety Blank and Play your cards right ? Porridge I used to enjoy but the amount of repeats has tarnished its appeal somewhat . Red Dwarf was good at the time but maybe if I watched it now it would just seem unfunny. Moons can any comedy stand the test of time and be funny and also not offend later generations ??
Every time I see a trailer for Eastenders it is the same format .Someone is having an affair and it's going to end in violence .
That’s the challenge of all comedy….the vast majority of it can only be current at the time of writing. of all the performance arts, comedy stands the rigours of time the worst. The best comedies have plenty of funny parts that don’t offend modern sensibilities, yet some people can only concentrate on the parts they know upset others. Comedy is of it’s time, if you didn’t live in that time it’s not reasonable to expect you to find it funny….there was plenty of dreadful crap like Mind Your Language and Love Thy Neighbour that despite the claims of satire simply fuelled division and hatred. The only consistently funny thing on TV is Gogglebox, that ages like a peeled apple in the sun.
It just highlights all the bad things that we can’t do bugger all about. It causes a lot of people unnecessary worry, which in turn, rubs off on people around them. Worrying dosnt really solve problems, just cause more. To much ‘what if’…Good things happen, too. But sometimes it’s simply too easy for a lot of people not to see…
