  1. Agree with rickyroo, paid council tax for 40 years , never had any kids ,so should I be entitled to a refund for the school portion , no I don't think so , I use the library all the time, its swings and roundabouts . Cant believe you think the Beeb is expensive costs less than a good night out .

  3. I'm so glad most of us recognise the Beeb for the amazing, valuable thing it is. I worry though that with all the commercial pressure from Murdoch and the other broadcasters rubbishing the service via their trash newspapers - the loathesome Daily Mail, the vile Murdoch rags (and yes I mean you, the Times and Sunday Times) - that there'll be a groundswell of negative opinion from all the dimwits who love Big Brother and the Beeb will be doomed. Add to that backing, presumably, from all the bods in government who'd stuff their trousers with backhanders if the Beeb was crushed and their mates could then launch a load of trash commercial channels.

I get Sky on a half price deal as need it for work. It's not for all channels and its still nearly £40 A MONTH. £480 a year. Presumably lots of punters pay double that and I still have to suffer the ads.
But apart from the HBO imports on Sky Atlantic and sometimes the news, there is nothing, nothing I ever want to watch. And there is always something on the BBC.
And all the great archive stuff I still watch, as does my son...Morecambe and Wise, Two Ronnies etc? Guess which channel paid for the writers and the talent and the pilot shows and the studios they were filmed in, just like now?
Name me one programme Sky has created from scratch that's a classic to stand the test of time.
Quality is what you pay for, not quantity, and I'm so happy to see that so many here are smart enough to realise that to get all that for the price of a few drinks a month is a great deal no matter how you watch it.

  5. I should have known better than to talk about this here, these sort of posts always bring out the old nostalgia from the 'just like the old days' gang. The BBC in its height was an amazing production company but it is a shadow of its former self and rife with corruption and backhanders. The content is poor quality in comparison to old.

What urks me is they are now forcing me to pay for a license to watch ANYTHING. For example, the live streams on Facebook. According to the new ruling I would need to have a to license to watch them on my phone. The TV license was originally intended to provide BBC content and to cover the production fees without having to resort to commercials, it's now covering any form of viewing.

Stuff that, I want to keep my money thank you and you can stick commercials on your channels

  8. My love of the BBC is for the here and now, not nostalgic. I'm happy to pay my licence fee for what I think is great content across TV, radio, web etc.

If it bothers you that much, just don't pay it!

I merely pointed out the fact that the tv licence fee gives one the right to veiw live TV transmissions and that it does not all go to the bbc but also ch4 or ch5.

True there might be the odd old show I'd watch again but that's due to me liking it not rose tinted nostalgic glasses.
