Only to work out what I need. I’m trying to find somewhere that sells them. The measurement I have managed to achieve is 0.08 ish, but that it with the gnarly shims. I would image brand new ones will be around the 0.10

Maybe/maybe the other way. The thinner ones particularly warp in all kinds of ways that could give you tighter readings that reality. If you end up having to use a "thin" one and 2 thicker, put the thin between the others. Better still is to make up your total thickness without using a thin one if possible.

    eg
if you need 0.9mm of shims, 3 x 0.30 would be better than 2x 0.40 and a 0.10. I know those are not actual shim sizes, but you get the idea.

Have you a gsf local? I got my shims from there recently and they had most sizes in stock

I’m not sure. I’ll look. I have seen their vans around sometimes.

I have the TLB group stash of Type 4 shims in my possession, are these the same size as the type 1? I'm not at home to check Bentley etc..

No, I don’t think they are. I think they are wider O/D, but narrower…

I think a lot of GSF stores dont stock VW parts. Like all the way along the M4 in Wales, none had a fan belt.

Went in GSF in Bristol last week , fairly central store near the town and I wanted some long reach plugs and a coil and a dissy cap and rotor and a nice new set of leads. They had a condenser and some points, they got me a dizzy in twenty minutes and they had a rotor button. The coil they could get for me the same day, they didn’t have any long reach plugs and couldn’t get any and the same with the HT leads, they had none in any store in the U.K. I was having a melt down with my van and it was playing up so I started with a new ignition setup to play with. The coil broke my heart as it was just under sixty five quid,,, for a coil,,, I nearly passed out.

Not trying to be inflammatory in any way shape or form here. BUT !

I’m with Soggz on this one :D

Im not in any style or fashion, what anybody could call an engineer or a half tidy mechanic or worserer any semblance of an electrician. When you guys help out with us dimmer of the dimm brothers, I’m guessing I only understand every second thing you say and why. With the exception of Mike as I never understand more than two words per paragraph with Mike. Mike does usually try another tack on jamming that info into our heads . Same with my mates that come out and help me. I could not have rebuilt that engine of mine without some one there helping me and telling me which bit to kick next. I bugger things up on a regular basis but I usually get there in the end. I follow a lot of stuff on here as some if not all of it is useful knowledge for somewhere in the future and some of it might stay stuck in my head but not much. My pal has been attempting to tell me exactly how a carby works and why and how it does what it does when it actually does it and toooo weak is terrible and the worlds gonna catch fire and too lean and some dolpihins are in for it
I’m sure to a casual bystander looking on it looks like I’ve glazed over and nodded off because it just ain’t sinking in, please don’t try and elucidate as I’m not due my afternoon nap for another hour.:) Chin up Soggzzzzy, you’re nearly there.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,Thanks for bearing with us all you clever lot :)

    Thanks Ozzie.
    Appreciate it.
I am actually a half decent mechanic, building things like bikes and engines, weather it be vw, Sthil, Honda etc, but I just had some strange life episode where other peoples problems, have dwarfs the simple, unimportant ones, that I have ( like putting a . In the wrong places, etc).
If you look at some stuff I have done, it ain’t bad. ( Even hailfrank says I am a good contributor to the site, when I’m not putting near banable stuff on, and sailing to close to the wind.)
I’m just having difficult times, like everyone has. As for being called an idiot that’s probably had too many little pills,( couple of quotes in one, to save time), I find that highly amusing.
But I do really appreciate everybodies input, wether it good or bad.
I do think that Barry should rewrite his manual, and put the descriptions, on the same side as the pictures, though. It would be more helpful for some of us.

Nah, long gone as far as I know. I’ve got a funny feeling that lot was the birth of GSF but it might have just been coincidental timings as one met its demise etc etc.

    Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,name I hadn’t heard for a while :)

Used to get stuff for my 1700 Twin door there, in the mid ‘90’s. Always had what you wanted, all the time. Great shop for parts.

  18. Swedeutch (think that's how they spelled it)?
Used to split my time between there and that vw scrapyard by the railway arches on Oxford Street, most weekends back in the day, trying to get a variety of old dubs to go on a little bit longer.
