The ultimate westy Berlin camper

  1. I’m after some ideas, inspiration, motivation… you get it..

I have a 1978 Westfalia Berlin. It’s awesome and we love it, but coming from a well laid out T25. We are struggling with the storage and facilities a little.

I’m wanting to make the most of the van and space available. I’m wanting to have the best possible Berlin for camping, whilst keeping it looking clean and original.

Plans so far, fit new original looking hob/sink unit.

Fit a shelf above the kitchen unit for stuff+fan

Fit a UK elec hook up, charger, RCD unit and a double socket, trying to use the original US unit to keep it looking right.

Remove water tank, and use either a small one for days out or external on site.

Mattress topper to get a good nights kip upstairs.

    Get a smaller table

Has anyone managed to fit a compressor fridge like the crx50 in a cupboard without completely altering the doors? I want to keep it looking as original as possible but practical. I’ve seen people have success with altering the ice box but to be fair for a day out the ice box works well. And when camping for a weekend or week that gets used as storage. So I think I’d rather get a chest fridge over that, atleast then I can stick it in the awning when we get to a site ?

I’d like a solar panel but won’t be this summer.

We use a CFX35 chest fridge behind the passenger seat. It doubles as a seat and foot rest when the seat is swivelled.
It can also be removed when not needed and doubles as a freezer.

I also have a 78 West Berlin. I put a Mestic MCC35 compressor fridge into the original space used by Westfalia for the fridge. I put a 100 w solar panel on to outside tray above the cab (other options available :)) and so far ( 4 day trips in UK) it is fully recharging my leisure (95amp) and starter battery with the fridge on constantly at 5⁰c. Have a look here

My wife and I took the top mattress away from the poptop bed and now have loads of space for stuff in shallow trays that stay put even when the roof is down and driving.

I also saw the shelf innovation in the spare wheel space somebody just showed here today. That looks interesting.

    Hope this helps
