  10. I just shut my brain off when filling up, it helps to avoid getting upset. Our cars all do around 35 mpg, work Navara doesn't get used much but is sub 30 mpg and I can probably get 50 odd from the bike.

The ultimate commuting solution for me is one of the electric motorbikes now available, but they are expensive to buy. What I really need is to be less lazy and get the push bike out to go to work (approx. 3 miles).

  11. It's a 2 litre 6 speed Skoda Octavia oil burner for me, 40 mile round trip to work, easy to get 50 mpg +, just pour petrol in the van and bike but am quite frugal in the Skoda,

  12. We recently got rid of my S-type 3.0litre v6. 17.4mpg. Last year we sold our 2.7diesel Discovery, 15.8mpg.

My bus is well economical compared to those 2 fuel guzzlers. :)

  13. Didn't read this thread before today, sat at lunch with a pasty and have to go back to an early reply re: tyre pressures.

My Saab 9-3 2.2TiD averaged 42mpg for the past 3k - mix of local, 22 miles to work daily and motorway visiting family at weekends - on new, but budget tyres. I check the pressures before last weekend and the fronts were at 28psi when they should be 35, I can only assume the tyre fitters set them wrong.

Went down to Devon for a long weekend and the average is now 47mpg (m'way, Devon lanes and a week of to and from work). Went back to the wifes Beetle and did the same 5 or 6 psi down and she has seen the difference in a week!

The bottom line I suppose is check tyres regularly!

  14. I am now thinking of fitting a big hook to the front of the car to latch onto the back end of lorries, just got to hope they are going my way :)

Just thought i'd ressurect this thread as i was gobsmacked just to find petrol had gone down  last 2 fill ups i've paid £138.9 and was 1p cheaper just, always use sainsburys as it's the cheapest by me, brimmed the tank in the beetle £65 from petrol light on to full - just under 48 litres has given me a shade under 26mpg this tank.

  17. hired a Corsa yesterday in Edinburgh, did about 170 miles in it and a refill was £25. Didn't look at the price per litre, but they mentioned to me before I left the hire place that because the new cars are so fuel efficient they will need to see the refill receipt when I return the car

Although it wasn't that efficient, I used about half a tank, and i'm not sure it actually had an engine in it because it was so gutless, it foiled my usual practice of getting a free refill by peeing in the tank...
    :)
