  1. Will get a blow torch thingy and try

Was no .3 originally, now no.1. so both the front two cylinders.

Just awkward getting a decent grip on them with grips as where they are

  2. I haven't got a clue either, can you tell:D
    I don't think I've got a broken piston ring have I?

Im assuming cylinder 3 will have a broken valve too when I get it off, is there a particular reason why both (opposite) cylinders would loose a valve like that?

  3. Others will know better - but with oil in the barrel that would suggest a worn ring??? @theBusmonkey @snotty @zedders @davidoft

My head and pistons were in a similar state - maybe a bit worse - and mine was down to the rings being worn and losing lots of oil.

    pkrboo and snotty like this.
  4. PS... its bloody good fun sripping these old engines down

  5. Like performing an autopsy :)....

  6. 1 and 3 are the hotter running cylinders generally

If you must get the flywheel off, borrow a Torque Meister and a flywheel lock, and a big 3 leg puller like wot I use (puller legs on starter ring, puller centre onto crank) ..

Drill the screws out from the top. smack them with an impact driver (in the tightening direction, with luck you will shear the heads off or they will start moving .. ) or buy a cheap chisel and chop them off with a hammer. The threads through the captive nuts will be bulging in rust.

  9. Yippee got the tinware screws out with heat. Brulee torch from the kitchen is just the job.

Head off, cyl 3 no dodgy valve
    Cyl3 on left

  11. So why would no.3 have no compression?

  12. looks like a crack in the head between the 2 valves just under the spark plug (overheated)...

A nice big crack between valves new head time although I think most type 1s have cracked heads

  14. Valves look well sunk in head but it may be the photo.
