I just had a look at the engine.
Piston rings all worn plenty of oil and soot caked in the heads.
Blow by showing as oil coming from behind rear pulley.

One badly cracked (both cylinders inlet to exhaust ) head one head needs new exhaust valve.
End float large and it felt a bit like several things were moving in there, not just a solid clonk.
    Oil cooler seals seeping.

As its a Vege recon it may already be line bored +1.0 mm and crank reground -0.5 mm ie at the limit like my old one.
Its also a 10mm stud block without the recessed no3 head stud, rather than the more refined later 8mm stud engine blocks.

So a named rebuilder might have to turn round and bill for time but still announce the engine block is toast.

I think best is to slap it back together and exchange it.

If there was a question of just gettng it going then getting rid of it then one valve would be the utter minimum bodge .

I agreed a recon exchange with a warranty and a temperature gauge would be best.
And making sure the timing , tappets and carburettor set up is perfect, without air leaks.

You don't gain a lot by exchanging T1 engines as the builders know from experience that almost all of it will be scrap.
For the sake of £100-200 I would shake myself free and go type-4. Even the smallest (1700) will be better performance and durability (and also happy with your existing gearbox). If you're up for some more expense in changing the box somewhere along the line, the 2L is the one to have.
    Wasn't @davidoft offering you a complete 2L FI earlier?

  3. Speak to @davidoft for a full turnkey type 4 2.0l fuel injected. Will give you time to save up for the scooby

I'm split on what to do with the motor in the westy, I'm sorely tempted by a Scooby but love the type 4. The FI one needs a rebuild, the s boot is split but I do have a spare and it has a misfire around 3000 rpm :(

  8. Thanks @mikedjames for the visit/advice, very much appreciated. Me describing stuff and posting pics on here for advice is all good but there's no substitute for someone who knows what they're doing, having a proper poke and look in the flesh,

So yep I'm happy with what mike's confirmed, I'm not going to bother trying to fix it.

Still interested in the type4 of davidof, but hadn't considered the gearbox. Will a 3 rib be ok with a 2.0 ?

  9. You selling yours @pkrboo ?
When do you mean by end of season?

  10. I was thinking of going scooby but would be til January at the earliest now as I am away for a few months after September. Give@davidoft a nudge. Should be ok with the gearbox

I have been looking around for a cheap type 4 for rebuilding but the prices even for a 1700 are going up so I would get one now if you can.
