Finally plucked up the courage to attack the sliding door runner cover with a rubber mallet to have a look underneath ... cleaned all crap out ... how can you tell if the nylon guide is worn ? I'm chasing an annoying rattle somewhere on the door when travelling that I can't replicate when stationary.

  3. Check behind the panel , there's a big circular spring which SHOULD have a lump of foam in the middle to stop it rattling against the skin ...
    Just a thought .

It's a much deeper noise, more like the top or bottom wheels rattling... changed top one, working my way down.

Adjustment. Top one is a rattler, try adjusting it in/out so it's tighter against the track.
Bottom shouldn't rattle with weight of the door but could if the a-pillar keep is lifting the door.
Middle shouldn't rattle due to the spring tension pressing it sideways against the track. Nylon block wears on the sides of it's groove, if that groove is wearing deeper the middle hinge/door adjustment is not adjusted correctly.

  7. Corrosion prevention. Just the stuff in the engine bay.
    Figured I might as well.
Realise the shrink wrap probably does that anyway.

  8. Bloke I bought my engine from gave it to me, as he was clearing his Dad’s garage out. I assume his Dad used it when touring. The fuel consumption must’ve been horrendous

Needs a stock R&P putting in it!

Indeed, unless you're planning AT tyres and a .77 4th...;)

Checked striker on B post, put some electrical tape on top edge and closed door...still there when opened door, so that alignment seems fine.
Top roller is tight against track and door flush with frame. Noticed a definite roller shaped indentation in runner where it rests when closed...should I slacken it off a bit ?

If it was loose allowing the door to rattle I'd adjust it. Other than that IDK.

  13. I have unpicked the two cushions on my Rock n Roll bed & removed the stuffing. I last changed it twenty years ago and it is once again totally worn out. I phoned up my favourite local auto trimmer to order a bit more only to discover that he's gone away to sodding Brunei.

We will be off to Wales. Changed to a hotel as its a lot closer than the campsite sadly, but it will save a fair bit of petrol.
My daughter in Swansea points out that the panic petrol hoarding in cars thing is worse where more people can actually afford to fill up their cars, and less bad where there are fewer people in that position.

Mine ended up as 0.15mm but sat at that value for all the time the engine lasted.

For the too small gap case its out with the sandpaper, try another stack of shims , or shim the flywheel onto the crank, or just sit with your foot on the clutch for a while ... .
Three (or more) shims is fairly important too, or it will soon have a reasonable endfloat because they are spinning too fast on the bearing face.

Fair point about where people can afford to fill up every other day vs where money is more pay packet to pay packet.
I've abandoned the camper idea for my Cornwall trip :( Two tanks of fuel there and back (at least) in a fuel hoarding panic situation, seems wasteful - and now the Volvo is fixed (Yay! New alternator so I don't have to just run it to work and back on the battery capacity, and then charge it up every night as I've been doing for 3 weeks) so I can take the dirty diesel instead.
Damn this fuel shortage, I was looking forward to a last camp of the year.

Drove it to Swansea. No fuel queues at services going West. Filled up for a sensible price.

Had bucking and hesitation under load with a points distributor. Like every hill it was misfiring..
Swapped out for another distributor. Smooth running returned.. condensor failure ?

Just as well as it really started raining in Wales on the M4.

Thought I should close the drivers side window instead of leave it open all winter. Broke it.
I’ll leave it half open all winter then!
