  1. Good luck, dude

  2. Looks worse than it is. All the metal that a new step has to attach to is sound underneath a bit of light rustage

Just got to chop the rotten bits off.

Bloody hell mate...it's not a young man's game maintaining these things.
That's why I think so many little jobs get neglected over the years and add up to a bucket load of pain as the craft get older.

We are sat out tonight...dirty burger tea, but I'm next to the side hatch. I needed a pish and a couple of years ago I'd have dived through it practically head first...tonight I went the long way round:rolleyes: The sooner I get this ACL done the better...

BTW...glad a nip of the nuts sorted it...thought it would:cool:
    Cheers...

You know where that led on mine - well beyond the reach of Sikaflex, although it looks more like the skin of the pillar and the complete front of the step at the very least ..

A reciprocating saw became my friend.

  5. Why have you chopped half the front of the van off?

The base of my A-pillar is rock solid (being "new"), the front valence is rock solid and the deformation panel is rock solid. The chassis rails that support everything are also rock solid.

All that needs changing is the step and the small closing panel.

It was because as I worked round the rot under the filler there was either a lot of patching to add to pre existing patches to the inner valance and chassis legs.. or a complete replacement of the deformation panel area needed. Then as I had a new lower front panel and the headlamp bowls were rotten, that went too. There was water getting in and just going across the front.
It has also had maybe 2 or 3 attempts at the steps and so the bottom of the A pillars were interesting as panels had been fitted "inside" where there should have been a metal box ..

Yes it was very wet and rotten and yet it didn't look too bad from outside..

Got brave and decided to attempt the last job before I can start on the interior. My bus had a tough previous life as a minibus in Soweto and some pillock chopped/hacked out the two cross braces by the back seat - drug smuggling? Who knows? I bought the cuts about 4 years ago so probably about time I got on with it.

Went off camping in the New Forest not far from Lymington for a few nights. Fantastic to be out and about in the van, some great roads round that way.

Following on from @pkrboo s work on his really late late bay, I also had a play with our really, really, really late bay and lobbed a couple of solar panels on the roof...

Chip has provided cold beverages and bbq food this evening though. The fridge is on 24/7 and is the gift that keeps on giving

  15. Standard diesel? Mount and it fits ok, may need to chop this bit off the gearbox to make me feel more comfortable about it though[IMG][IMG]

Lol. That often breaks off anyway. It's just a hole that a bracket for coolant pipes bolts to. Get the grinder out...:D

What's more important is that the beautifully fettled locking differential gearbox gets spun over by an engine...:p

  18. Good that you are resurrecting the original ‘Slipper Storage’ compartment.

I reckon a hot water bottle would fit in there too.

  19. I'd always assumed that eyelet on the gearboxes was actually so they could hang them on an overhead conveyor at the factory.

  20. It will be soon, hopefully
