Tax exempt vehicle paperwork

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Molteni Mike, May 24, 2019.

  1. It took me three or four post offices to get someone who knew what I was talkin about...!
I had my heritage letter, log book, insurance, and some pictures, to show it wasn't altered from stock (it isnt), and she did it all on the screen in about 10 mins, then said, I'm all done!
My advice is to go in, and ask the intelligent looking one if they know what you're on about!

  2. You did well then. I ended up sending everything to DVLA. I did eventually get Historic but it took 3 months and they still haven't refunded my last 2 months tax or returned my vehicle birth certificate. Still, mustn't grumble.

  3. Oh joy! At last a letter from DVLA acknowledging receipt of my documentation and a "V10" form for me to apply to re licence the camper in the Historic tax class.

Meanwhile I'm about to have another months' tax (£23) taken from my account by standing order, for a vehicle manufactured in June 1979

Will return the form recorded delivery, and hope get a refund for my
    overpayments................................

    Yaaay!
Just checked the DVLA site to discover that the bus is taxed!

They took their time but better late than never!

  5. It’s not an overpayment until the tax class has actually been changed.

  6. My bank has just received only £23-62 refund from DVLA , merely 1 months tax. The log book has come back by post with the camper classed as an historic vehicle.

The DVLA has sat on the paperwork since April while happily collecting £23-62 a month since then, can I expect a refund of the additional 3 x £23-62 ??

To confirm, vehicle manufactured June 1979 and all paperwork accepted by DVLA

Have just cancelled Direct Debit so they can't get another £23-62 at the beginning of August.

    What should I do now?

Does anyone know who to address letters of complaint to at the DVLA re their vehicle tax cock ups? This has just reminded me they owe me a refund too - I’ve given up hope on seeing again the original paperwork I sent them that they lost.

As they lose important paperwork all the time I wouldn’t bother wasting your time.

You are aware that there’s a pandemic on?

I doubt they sit on stuff, they are probably under resourced at the best of times.

True, but hopefully they won’t have forgotten they owe me a few quid...

From reading this thread, I would trawl the POs until I could get it done on the spot and walk away with my patiently acquired documents. Worth the effort?

  15. It's been about 4 years since I did mine so I can't remember the full details, mine was further confused by being an import so though it's a December 1975 manufacture date it is down as first registration in 2003. The first couple I tried hadn't a clue, to the extent that one of them didn't even know exemption was a thing but the third one I went to had a young fella working there who was a bit more proactive. He said he wasn't sure but would just try it anyway and bingo, the computerised system let him do it.

  16. Just keep trying different ones until someone knows.....i got lucky third time too!
I went in with log book, heritage letter from VW (the free version) previous MOT, insurance details and photos, to show it wasn't modified. The girl punched the details into her 'puter, and Robert was my fathers brother.

  18. Annoying to think that DVLA have now changed my vehicle to Historic Class, yet have refunded me just 1 of the 4 months I've "overpaid" as a result of their slow system. This delay is down to them, they've had the paperwork for months.

Do I just "let it go", or should I persue this with an official complaint ?

I emailed DVLA with my reg ,they replied within two weeks with the date I could claim historic on the v5 ,I filled the historic taxation section on the v5 took it to the post office ,they gave a printout to say I had taxed the van a ( no money changed hands i)was historic, they sent my v5 to the DVLA .
The DVLA returned my updated v5 ,job done . I didn't any other forms or documents.

No! Once its classified as historic, you can take it off sorn by taxing it which will cost nothing as it's historic. I think you need form V9 or something. That's what I did and it worked.
