The government site is sh*t. Unless it’s changed, it’s April 1st.
Have a look at the dozens of other threads on the same subject on here.

  2. just spoken to them via their "helpline"
they confirm it's april 1st. a type of "sliding scale". I'll need to contact them shortly before April. presumably I'll need to pay tax until then, meaning my camper will have incurred tax for 40 years and 10 months????

Yep, as said, you’ll need to tax it until April.

    ron

sorn it then tax it at free rate - gets your unused tax back

It won’t as there won’t be any unused tax.
It is currently taxed until end March 2020, and it becomes eligible for tax exemption from 1st April 2020.

  6. He could get a refund for January to March unused tax, if it goes on SORN now.

Of course, but that’s a bit like saying it could have been tax free for the last 5 years had it been sorn’d.

  8. It is and I’d much rather be using it, but if he really wants to save a bit of tax, it’s the only way.

  9. Just checked, and the tax actually runs to the end of February. :( Looks like I'll need to re-tax it then try to claim a refund before the end of March.

I think you can pay monthly now. Just do that for March then cancel the payment.

  11. From posts last year --- "You do not need to pay vehicle tax if your vehicle was built before 1 January 1979. If you do not know when your vehicle was built, but it was first registered between 1 and 7 January 1979, you do not have to pay vehicle tax.’ https://www.gov.uk/historic-vehicles/vehicles-exempt-from-vehicle-tax"

Just checked and the website still shows 1 January 1979... Can't get through on the 'phone, there's a message saying go to the website. I've already cancelled my monthly direct debit for next month on the basis that the camper will be tax free.

Just to restate, I've letter from VW stating that my vehicle was manufactured in June 1979.

What on earth is going on??

    Ignore the website.
It will be tax free from 1st April. Take all your paperwork into your local post office on or just before 1st April and get them to deal with it.
    Job jobbed.

  13. Thanks, but the last time I tried this at the main Post Office, I was fobbed off with the registration date as the key one.

Meanwhile, as the registration date was 25/03/1980, maybe this will be sufficient for the Post Office this time ??

  14. I commented on another thread about this. My post office wouldn't deal with it as the registration date is shown as 2002 (which is date of importation) and they could't act on the birth certificate I showed them for 8/2/79. I was told by the DVLA over the phone to send the docs to Taxation Team, DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BF.

Your post office still won't go on 25/3/80 until next year, but DVLA ought to recognise the manufacturing date and make it historic from 1st April this year. This may all be irrelevant right now of course. I've not had a response yet since sending stuff on 10th March and any government employees are likely being redeployed elsewhere.

If you are thinking of posting stuff in make sure you copy everything, send a covering letter which explains everything and get the package tracked. At least I know the papers were received and signed for.

Must be luck of the draw with Post Offices. Mine did it no problem at all, and it had a 2002 date on the V5.

  16. Looks like I may have to risk driving an "untaxed" vehicle during the virus, the alternative being a risky trip to the Post Office. I was hoping this could all be done online - strewth

You can do what @andyv said from the comfort of your own home, and a quick trip to a post box....

  18. His advice was to do this by Recorded Delivery, hence a trip to the Post Office unfortunately.

Sack off the recorded delivery bit then!

  20. As mentioned by 2 members (posts 13 and 19), documents sent to the DVLA have been "lost". The VW letter might be irreplaceable.
