Good point - there was a request for volunteered to keep it updated in the staff room a while ago but nobody put their name forward.

from my personal experience when it was an "official" event that mods or admin organised and publicised as you arrived on site they came and introduced you to others which was handy if you weren't very good at breaking the ice yourself that's all.

Yes, I agree, also being 'official' meant that I didn't feel that I was gate crashing a 'private' party when I went to my first ever TLB camp.

I try to approach anyone that I haven't met before at any event where I am expecting to meet TLB people. I suppose it's an obligation I feel as a mod. It has led to a few blank looks .....

in the past having a brown van and being the butt of the joke (pun intended) broke the ice for me, many people came up and said "you must be ricky" this is the poo bus" now being the odd T5 i'm expecting "are you the builder? can i borrow your paper when you're done with it"

A more central location is nearly always a winner or even moving things around a bit so different people can attend

Plus it's all about getting people, new and old parked up in a big group, not being isolated on their own or in little groups where they feel out of it, then introducing yourselves and breaking the ice, someone at a camp has to take a lead when people are turning up

  11. It is very hard to be the organiser if you dont get commitment from everyone . It is hard cos of life and weather but looking at it the other way , it takes alot of organising , people front up and tell people who own sites etc etc we are going to bring this many people(approx ) , but if you dont get the back up , "flop "lands at the feet of the organiser . I think people generally make most newcomers welcome if they want to join in,after all thats the point surely. Example we sat in keiths field and matchey turned up , i dont think anyone had an idea who he was ta start with (no disrespect their either) but he was soon having fun and the banter was flowing .All clubs that ive ever belonged too have "cliques" (friends surely that have gotten to know and like one another isnt it ?)
Anyone in the world can fall out with someone , but that dont make the world go round . This is only my opinion but i think if you say your going ,then you do your damnedest to go . Deposits normally help embarrassments all round ,paying up front is really the only way the organiser can cover himself and those providing the venue and the enjoyment of others .It is just too easy to pull out if you dont commit for some.
We all have real life stuff and sometimes it cant be helped , but as long as its not mega bucks does it really matter if you loose a couple of bob if that is whats needed. Ive done just one , thought id do more but finding a venue where the land owner can give us what we want and is acceptable to them aint easy , weather and distance are always a prob especially if its a one or even two nighter , winter used to make it very difficult too . I think spring camp is a goodun cos everyone is keen ta get out and get the vibe . Its a real downer when you look forward to any event and its called off but even more so those that put so much into it . Big shame this , i would have loved to have come but i cant commit at the mo , personal stuff just doesnt allow .
Be good if we could get together n make a date or two for a big tlb party next year cos imo they are bludee marvelous . Have fun anyway Bern n co.

Thanks Barney - a few people will be dropping around so that will be good.
I've instigated a few camps with smaller groups this year. I think it works better if people have to book themselves directly so there aren't any financial commitments from the organiser.

Yes it was - typical TLB thread

  14. Was just reading it and realised it had gone off on a bit if a tangent

If it wasn't for the fact that I am playing hockey tomorrow, and two different birthday parties I would have got the van finished and cone over with the family

I was looking on the bright side - it's unlikely that anyone would have missed the news :)

  16. I don't think it is, as your "Keith's field" and Techenders weekends prove.
But some TLB events would be good.
