Stupid ownership question #2 - locking the doors

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Wispy, Mar 14, 2014.

  1. Seriously, how the hell do I lock a) the sliding door, and b) the rear door. Cause I can't work it out.

Also, how straight forward/expensive is it to put new locks on so that everything matches and uses just one key? One of my locks only works from the inside :(

  2. Without seeming to sound pedantic, turn the key!
They're a full 180 degree turn unlike the front doors which are more car like.

  3. The key will only work one way in as well.

On the slider the key only turns about 90 degrees. On the inside there's a latch next to the handle.
    Rear door?
You can re-key your locks all onto the same key. You'll probably find you've got the wrong keys for some locks.

  5. Sliding four is quater turn down and rear window door is 180 degree turn but the keys are only one sided so you have to have it in the right way around to turn it ;)

  6. What year is the Bus? My cross-dresser is 180 degrees on both doors but the late bay is only 180 on the tailgate the slider is like the fronts.

  7. It's a 1977. All the lock seem stiff (fnar fnar), and nothing wants to turn 180 degrees.

Does the Slider lock from the inside?
Only the tailgate turns 180 deg

If the slider has had a new seal, and/or doesn't sit right the key won't work - try the inner latch as @Baysearcher says - if this doesn't work then you need to sort the alignment. If it does work, then you might have a key issue.

Rear door on my 74 is 180 degrees as @Top Banana Racing says.

If they are stiff, like ours, you need to lube them up else the key might snap (I must get round to sorting ours) - some light oil will do the trick

I'd use a lithium grease, it doesn't attract crud like oil will.

good call, Id never thought of that! You prompted me to sort ours out now :D

  15. I have to use 3 keys for mine. No.1 does the ignition, No.2 does the drivers door and the rear, No.3 does the sliding door (well it opens it but only closes it sometimes so I generally close from the inside). No key does the passenger door so it has to be opened from the inside. I quite like the idiosyncrasy of it all.

  16. dont know if its just earlys do you not have to lift door handle up to pull it in on later than 73 then ?? its not latched properly till you do on mine ??

  17. 72/73 they changed.

  18. Shut sliding door - it only works when the door is shut
put key in with the long bit of the ovoid pointing to the front
turn it so it points down about 60-90 degrees - click - locked
let it return to horizontal - remove key
    to unlock
put key in - see above
turn it so they the long bit of the ovoid goes up - click unlocked

    tailgate
    Look at the lock
the slot should be horizontal with the opening on the right
insert key - ovoid pointing to the right
turn key 180 anti clockwise - no click
    tailgate locked - remove key
