i'm with you dean i'm just (with my railway interest) fully aware i doubt it can be stopped, best case is to future proof it so that in 50 years it doesn't have to be widened again.

As for the green belt being built on its nothing (unless you live near it). Here in England something like 2% - 3% is urban so one more little train track ain't gonna make much impact (unless you live near it).

as for the houses being demolished I bet a good few needed that doing years ago but the councils couldn't afford it.

Dean have you been to Birmingham, its a wonder people don't wanna get out faster than 20mins ;D

Rick your term 'future proof' is salesman talk as we all know computers are/were sold 'future proof'. But yes when we build thigs one should over engineer/build to a higher spec as we can't see the future (well you mortals can't).

As for the rail network in France and Spain being straight it is indeed very but then they do have a little bit more land mass than us with the population further apart so don't have to go wibbly wobbly.

Maybe its 2% or 5% at the moment but if we dont keep it at that those figures will change and how long before its the other way round? Maybe if we reach the point of having great grand children it may be 2% of green left and then we will feel like the people in the video.

On a similar but side note, has anyoe noticed how over developed the new motorway junctions have become during refurb/widening works on the M1 between Hemel and Bedford, what used to be simple junctions off/on the motorway have now grown 5 fold to include uneccessary long sweeping bends, and multiple exit lanes etc etc,

An updated google maps image would be interesting.b

  10. We need more trains, the network is over stretched as it is. Maybe HS2 isn't the best solution for the money BUT look at countries that we say have great rail networks like France - they build new and dedicated high speed lines that consequently work much better than our shared infrastructure.

Double decker - you can have anything you want in a new dedicated line!

Tunnels and the like for HS2 - adding billions to the bill to keep a few tory voters happy in the commuter belt. Round here we can all see a power station or 2 and nobody cares. Get over it.

    Build more trains I say..

(keeps Mork's Test Lab busy fatigue testing the component's base materials )

Ok so its a bit stereotype of me to think like this but Im quite surprised at the amount of TLB users that want more trains. I always thought Dub Owners where more hippy like and more save the world so would have thought there was far more people on here into Green Issues and stopping Green belt land being destroyed.

  19. oh dear ,that old chestnut "will take vehicles (trucks, vans...) off our already overused roads) oh really ? do the proper investigation , it will NOT reduce traffic, it will shift traffic and create serious bottle necks(think heathrow m25 6 lane) elsewhere, traffic NEVER has reduced! politicians trot that one out endlessly , >m6 pay 4 bypass < a failure within one year , so they , in their wisdom , put the cost up ! doh!now that really encouraged people to use it ! whatever the true intention re that line , whatever the outcome , traffic reduction aint any achievable end result , increasing the cost of fuel , as is now ongoing will put motorists off the road,,.
