Lovely thought but out of touch with what happens in the real world!
You can fight, but you wont win.

This country desperately needs investment in the aging and decrepit rail network. As explained earlier, its not a realistic option to bring the existing network up to the standards required today. That only really leaves the option to build new, and it has to be built somewhere. If its not on Green Belt it'll be near wild crested newts or some such and another small band of people will object.

i wouldn't get disheartened dean, if people like you didn't care then 'the man' would get away with far worse, my argument (and it's daft 'cos it affects me) is it WILL happen and it might as well stay close to other rail lines to minimise the inevitable.

Dont get me wrong Dean I agree that we should protect the green-belt. I just dont think a badly written website making some really spurious claims is going to achieve much in terms of stopping a multi billion pound project.

    What alternatives are there?

But thats not how supply and demand works......

An increase in demand usually = an increase in supply. If there is a market (which there clearly is) business will go flat out to try and supply, and profit from, that market.

What you're saying equates to an increase in demand being serviced by the existing supply. The only effect this will have is an increase in prices and an even worse service (over crowding etc). Sorry but its not going to happen.

As for people not needing to travel, tell that to the companies who employ said commuters.

As for the generation before us being fine, it was also considerably smaller than our generation.

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

The main problem is in general people can't afford to live where they work. In my part of the country...
People who can't afford a decent house where they work in London live in Cambridge
People who can't afford to live in Cambridge live in Ely
People who can't afford to live in Ely live in the outlying villages and
People who can't afford to live in the villages live in Black Fen Drove
Thus everyone is commuting to work. I blame Norman Tebbit.
If house prices were in line with local wages very few people would need to commute.
But people then would get greedy - they realise by commuting to an expensive place to live they can have expensive place to live wages and have a nice holiday or two a year and on we go.
I worked over the internet for nearly 20 years from the bottom of my garden. Some of the people I worked with I never met - bit like on here really.

Dean - I know you care about the green belt and all that but it can't be denied that your sudden fervour for the subject coincides with you moving to a nice green bit yourself. They can run as many train lines as they like through the fens - it's crap anyway, you wouldn't notice. :)

Would double decker trains be viable..appreciate tunnels and some bridges might need altering, would the tracks and whatever the platform part of tracks is called take it?
