Stereotyping - Humorous or old hat and offensive?

I just wondered how it is going to change if it should change at all.

From my point of view I see stereotyping as laziness, inept vocabulary or just plainly offensive. I am not saying I don't do it I do at times - when I do it it seems as if I was just being lazy and could have thought harder and given a slightly more intellectual response, Then there are times when I see people defending their stereotypical views and it dawns on me how inept their responses are and I wonder how daft I look when I post up this type of stuff.

The use of stereotyping sometimes tells more about the person typing it than the person it is used to describe. It may say something about their age, or their upbringing, education etc, it may say something about their political racial views, but usually it is just about lack of education or learning, A lot of us were brought up in the 70's when tv and radio was full of stereotypical comedy, the like's of the marvellously talented 'Bernhard Manning' or the well written ' Love thy neighbour' absolute gems those were ( Not!), but they were just a couple of examples of what was a very different world of comedy from today and if that was your background noise back then then you are bound to know how easy it can catch on and become part of the every day humour. Today fortunately it isn't accepted and I find younger people that use stereotypical wording in their everyday language particularly offensive, they do know better!

Thankfully the users of this forum seem very thoughtful regarding the use of stereotypes, Yet I wonder if the use of them will ever stop. It is so easy to class people differently from yourself. ' off the council estate. he's a lorry driver, she's a Doctor' etc. All those minor descriptions conjour up an image immediately in our minds and we automatically classify them as either beneath us or above us. When it comes to people race religion or sexuality then the descriptions become more varied and at times overly descriptive/offensive. Again I am guilty of all the above albeit usually with tongue firmly in cheek, but I am not alone and I wonder how how long it will be before i get lazy and fall back on the old stereotype to get a laugh. I will try my best not to, will you?

  2. Im thinking as i type here ; When you go to a meet up /show with other VW owners you tend to make a first impression based on the camper ,not like in real life where you base a first impression soley on the person themselves , its the same at dancing where you can dance with a stranger and your first impression of what kind of person they are is how they dance , its when you find out what they do for a living ,you can start to make all sorts of assumptions .
For instance you get talking to someone and he/she might be dead scruffy and straight away your thinking perhaps i should leave now but if you were the to find out this guy is a surgeon that changes the way you look at him but he could also be a right nasty bit of work ,
So making a decision aabout someone on the web is very difficult perhaps best not to although we all do it :hattip:

i wrote a clever reply but the scousers nicked it.

  4. Its easy with camper owners though as we are all middle aged dope smoking , real ale drinking hippies, stuck in the 1970's. and apparently all from the South.

Its a dull life without humour, freedom of expression..... Lengthy reply deleted in case someone is offended....

    Thus is what happens.

unless i specifically insult someone to their face or their username on here i don't see an insult as it's not aimed at one person, if you want to take offence at calling certain creeds certain stereotypical terms then you need to get a life is my opinion, this country has gone p.c mad. - i blame the welsh, bunch of shee...... oh wait.

I don't see it as lazy, sometimes it's simply efficient.

I find nowadays that the real laziness comes from people with a moral crusade - you know, the ones that get all uppity because something is said that either that triggers their intellectual 'out of order to say that' radar.

What is acceptable changes - drink driving is a hanging offence now, it wasn't 30 years ago - same for smoking and in the future speeding.

I have no issue with people taking offence (as often stated I don't lose sleep at night if I do it as it's exceedingly rare it was intentional from me) though I find their hypocrisy nauseating when they try to paint the same picture with an 'intellectual' brush.

Being 'offended' is quite in fashion it seems, its the cover all bases if you dont quite fit the stereotypical black disabled benefit claiming asylum seeking single mothers that I know and love....there always seems to be something people are willing to get offended by.

  11. I'm from Essex, stereotyping is just what happens to us, same with the Scousers, the Welsh and the Australians. Its neither offensive nor funny, its just life, every day

The Irish seem to get off pretty lightly these days...

  12. I find stereotyping groups vile and insulting.

Can't chat on here all day as I have to start the Combine up and go and get some blackbirds with a gert big stick after which I will have a pint of Cider before sleeping with my cousin.

This is all part of the problem isn't it - differing opinions, why can't we all just behave and do us we are instructed, think the way they tell us or simply just comply and stop reading opposing opinions posted by clever people on the internet. Stop thinking you lot. just do it!

    Tongue firmly in cheek ;)

  20. stereotyping is great, especially in person in a big group because you can offend everyone in one go.

I'm not a racist bigot. I just hate everyone.
