I know most of you lot are southerners but for the best pub pie I have had in years it’s “ The pound Inn “ Leebotwood Shropshire . Sorry couldn’t get the link to work. Real Ale and last time I went it had a choice of about 7 homemade pies accompanied by a similar number of gravies and varieties of potato….a pie man’s Nirvana . If you are in the area ( which is lovely ) don’t miss it Ps I went to Wigan Tech so know a good ‘un
The worst pies are eaten at half time whilst at football washed down with a plastic cup of luke warm watery Bovril. Soggy pastry, welded to the foil container, 1% meat content, hotter than the earths core and ridiculously expensive
Blackburn rovers used to do a good one. Interestingly heard Delia talking about Norwich…she said that she couldn’t find a local pie maker that could handle the variation of demand so now use Pukka pies ( not bad but .)
Whether it was any good depends on how much you paid for said pie. If cheap then what did you expect.
I can’t stand the pot and flakey pastry lid. Often they seem to me like they’ve just popped out of the microwave!! the mrs bought a big Pukka Pie which we had for tea. I didn’t have the heart to say I don’t much like Pukka Pies normally, but it said new recipe, so in for a penny… mot was actually pretty good
Pre Veggie I have a couple of oddly shaped meat pies at Roker Park , Sunderland and they were a welcome treat to a cold Southernern on the windy terrace . Never braved one of those horible smelling boiled hotdogs at football grounds but did used to enjoys the Tip Top soft drinks as a kid in the 70s at the Manor Ground (Oxford United )..
It wasn't cheap ..but a mid range cost for your average pub meal . But they vary in quality . I have had cheap priced bar meals with excellent quality pies . My bind is the fact that to make pastry and a decent amount of meat shouldn't be a stinge .
Hmm will have to call there when i visit my cousin who lives at Leebotwood on the A49 ,there is the Copper Kettle pub there too ...is it also on the main rd ?
You speak the truth. Bovril used to be my lucky half time drink after we were losing 3 nil in the first half, I had Bovril from the tea hut, and we equalised before the final whistle. I never found having a pie at half time affected our win potential, which was lucky as they were as you describe also.
My daughter worked for a while at Southampton football ground selling pies and burgers. Once a punter grabbed the guy across the counter who sold him a burnt burger.. security prevented this escalating into more than a collar grab..
A true delicacy …for the uninitiated it’s a bap containing a pie filling, various types but meat and potato was the best, steak n kidney was a challenge as it squirted out all over the pavement.
I had a mate growing up who worked for Peter's Pies in Cardiff. He would happily eat one of their products over anyone else's pies - as opposed to a few different people I've met over the years who worked at food factories that wouldn't touch the product produced in their factory with a Marmitey stick. Shout out to anyone that eats Turkish Delight. We used to have a pie for dinner when I was in school - they minced it to within an inch of its life so any chewy bits (cow bubblegum) barely survived - I don't recall any taste, but you could play football whilst eating one. As an aside. Chiquito's restaurants used to serve soup in a hollowed out bap - it was a high risk meal, will the bap integrity break down over time and spill the soup - will the soup be cooled enough over time before it breaches the bap and goes all over the plate? Pie baps - as @Huyrob intimates - are the future.
we used to have a member here who worked at coca-cola dealing with scrap metal there. There was a lot of it because the chemicals used ate through the stainless steel in a few months. The only product they made that he would drink was iron brew.
