One of my favourite pub meals is the classic steak or steak and kidney pie . We all know they vary in how they are presented . However went for a pub meal and the worst was presented . Firstly, number one disappointment comes with pot base ...OK not a good start Secondly ,watery gravy minimal meat with the odd gristle . Finally the old ladys hat flakey pastry about 4 inches high and breaks up like a redundant wasps nest ..breaks up in to millions of pieces and every bit doesn't reach your mouth . Won't be going back ...Anyone else have problem pie issues...and what you expect a good pie should be ?
I know some people have a problem with the pot instead of a pastry base. I don’t, per se, but I agree with you on the rest of the points. I think the pot base could’ve been forgiven had the rest of it been remotely edible. I do love a pie (as evidenced by my enlarging stomach).
Definition of a pie... '...A pie is a baked fish me made of a pastry dough casing casing that contains a filling of various savoury or sweet ingredients...' Calling a dish with food in it with a pastry topping a pie is misrepresentation...
I dont think i have ever bought a "good pie" the ones you buy are almost always as Faust and others report, no meat , crap gravy, if its a steak an ale pie lord knows what "ale" they use. Only way to get a good pie is make it yourself , or possibly the John Kirkwood way
I have been served many a good pie over the years. Buying a decent one at a supermarket is often good if you choose well. I have never made a pie my dearly departed mum used to make an amazing chicken and ham pie - one of the proper, so huge it would serve many, types of pie. (I do prefer an individual pie tho cos you get all of YOUR pastry and YOUR filling to yourself. Edit, I think it had leeks in. I’m a recent convert to the leek. @scrooge95 and daughter thing. I used them recently in my homemade mushroom gravy.
My Grandma used to make the best steak and kidney pie that the world has ever tasted, so compared to that I'm frequently disappointed. I'm keen to have a pie completely enclosed in pastry, but it's not a deal breaker if the pastry top is good enough and the contents of the pot are even better.
A steak and kidney pie should come in a tin foil tray and squirt gravy all down your front when you bite into it
Clearly the best are homemade ...but it is a lottery when going out to an unknown restaurant or pub .
Those sound fab. I just need to find someone with a gas oven in their van!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! @scrooge95
Why oh why would anyone ruin a perfectly good steak pie by putting something as vomit-inducing as kidney in it?
It's pure economics. Without kidney in them there would only be a steak pie that the supermarkets could sell. By adding kidney it becomes a steak and kidney pie which means that there are two types of pie they can sell. That means more money. I worked this out all by myself I'll have you know!
