Considering adding to my VW collection importing a splitty. Is the cross member rotten in this picture? Just trying to assess what I'll be in for........
I'm no expert but I would think it should be solid all the way across? Might be worth getting that spare kidney on eBay now...... lol
Nice a 59 samba has to be wort a few kidneys. I only know cos I've just taken my beam off and have been looking at the different ones and I have a 58 and a 59 beam in the garage, one off them will be going onto my van a 62.
Looks like it's just the bottom plate on it that has gone... I'm not even sure that it should be boxed in like that!! You do get some odd mods, so it wouldn't surprize me if it had been boxed!!
It's a piece of box section so all the sides should be non rotten , maybe 2 mm thick, it's not bad to replace and cheap enough to buy
Splits drive like a bag of spanners! It's the only vehicle I've ever driven where the wheel is held dead straight and the vehicle wanders all over the road lol great looking though.... If only you could drop a splittie shell onto late bay running gear you'd have the perfect bus
it has been done..... drive before you buy is good advice ,not for me either and I love vws.. box section 10 minute fix...
Mines got a type 4 engine fitted, 1303 running gear and rear Suspension and drives better than my bay window ever did.
If only they were all made like yours bro......i'd have one then The one I bought looked fantastic, but I was in for a shock when I drove it lol With hindsight, i'm relieved the sale fell through.....I got my bay and completely kitted it out for 3 grand less than the split cost and that needed about 3 grands worth of kitting out too
