Someone tried to nick our campervan!

  1. Was woken up at 3am by the dog woofing to go outside. It's not massively unusual as we have big glass barn doors and a lot of foxes and cats passing through the garden. Got up, let both dogs out - pouring with rain so one dog comes straight back in.

Waited a few mins and shouted the other one to come in - no response - shouted again and looked out the door and realised that the gates to our courtyard were flung wide open (they are usually bolted shut) and while I was peering into the darkness trying to work out whether they were actually open, or if I was just not properly awake, I saw a weird shape that I just couldn't work out what it was. At the point I eventually realised it was a man with a bag, the dog spotted him too and came haring across the garden at the rate of knots woofing like a hound of Hades.

Bloke jumps a thousand feet in the air and hot foots it out of the gate. I go running straight out, barefoot and in my pyjamas and leg it after the dog. Get the gate shut, and then realise that both our campervan and the landy have been ransacked so go in to get the husband.

The robbing barsteward had been through 4 coats, 2 bags, opened a wrapped birthday present, pulled absolutely everything out from every nook and cranny, dumped all my (sweaty) gym kit on the floor (but nicked the bag which is what I'd seen being waved around) and (apart from that) nicked absolutely nothing - nada, nil. nowt.

It looks suspiciously like they were looking for keys to the camper (or the landy) as nothing was taken - not even the satnav which was right next to the gym bag.

We thought for most of the morning that they had swiped a set of master keys from the kitchen that had landy, camper AND beetle keys on but thankfully I've found those in a coat pocket. They do however seem to have got away with keys for the landy.

@Paley has swiftly been despatched up the ladder to replace all the bulbs in the security lighting (typical, one had blown only last week), a ruddy great padlock has been purchased for the gates and Womble has been given plenty of treats for seeing them off as quickly as he did.

Chilled to the bone to think the robbing barstewards could have got their grubby hands on Arthur

Good work, shame the dogs didn't rip them apart! Best thing you can have.

  5. Glad you caught them at it before they d had chance to make off with the motors.
Give Womble some fuss from me.
Roughly where abouts are you? They could be on the rounds, run up to xmas and that.

  6. Are you getting the locks changed on the Landy? If they have the keys, they may try again.

  7. Really sorry to hear about this hun

  8. very lucky! well done doggy!

  9. That's a bit grim.
Don't worry about the keys to your lady,
just park it outside your gates with the gear lever wired directly to the mains.
    Can't possibly injure anyone ...
... unless they previously stole your keys.

If it's any comfort I don't know any car thieves that would look inside a locked vehicle for a set of keys to it - that makes no sense.

It does highlight the need to put keys away safely inside the house though - key theft burglary is on the rise.

Glad they got nothing, good on the dogs!

  13. Knowing the law of this fair isle, if your dog had bitten him you'd be getting a letter from an ambulance chaser within the week lol
Happy that nothing was pinched but if they have a set of keys for your landy, I'd definitely be looking at securing it or changing the lockset on it.......guarantee they'll be back for it in due course, or they'll sell the keys and your address on to another thieving scumbag.....

There was something about last night, our pooch woke me barking her noggin off at 2am this morning, I went down & couldn't see anything, let her out and she stuck close to me ruffing every now and then!!! After 10 mins I went back up to bed but it took her ages to settle again, barking every now and then
