So what are you all doing for the Easter weekend?

  1. I'm seeing advantages of a modern screen, wouldn't like that to happen.

Laminated screen would just get a 15 cm crack like mine did the other day. It was sold by JK a few years back made by Pilkington as far as I can remember.

You could try the trick for checking which face of which bit of glass in a double glazing unit has the "low-e" coating on it (so it doesn't get put in insid out) which is to shine a torch at it ...
For the double glazing this is to see which of the multiple reflections is greenish. With the laminate I suspect you will get two reflection instead of one, but it's just an idea .......... I haven't actually done this.
PS ... The edge should show a very subtle line

    ... this weekend:
Friday, DIY on the garage conversion holiday let.
    Saturday, ???
Sunday, trip to Brizzle to catch up with mini me,
Monday, off to Cov for one of those "locked in a room with your flatulent brothers-in-law trying to suss out the clues to escape before everyone chokes" things.

  6. Today we drove to Dorchester to meet Dippy the Dinosaur. It was really good! Free to see, but you could pay extra to go round the museum (we did). We'd never been to see him at the Natural History Museum so it was great to see him on tour.

  7. I'm tempted to get a heated screen, partly because a new one will be clearer to see out of and being laminated safer in events such as this.

    Drop a brick on it?

Seriously though, when I look at my toughened one from a certain angle, it appears to have bluey purple colour oval shapes on it, a bit like peacock feathers - I think this is a visual trait of the toughening process which you don't see with a laminated screen. Not a dead cert way of telling, but if you can see the stress marks all over it, it's toughened not laminated for sure.

  9. The purply bits are normal, due to the heat treating. Can normally see laminations by squinting at the side. Toughened is fine, you just get a lap full of glass shards

  13. Lap full of glass shards indeed :D

But honestly it was surprisingly not too scary. It looks really bad in that picture but the windscreen held its shape long enough for me to get to the emergency lane (I was overtaking an overtaking lorry when it happened).
The holes appeared after opening and closing the doors.
And the most important thing is both the passenger and myself are unscratched.

Went biking in the Forrest this morning but most of the trees had fallen over , all our favourite sneaky trails were decimated:(
Came home, mowed the lawn for the first time this year.
Going to a gin festival tomorrow at the old Victoria baths in Manchester

  15. Not sure about driving 70miles to dymchurch tomorrow. Wiper motor still kaput, so relying on Rainex. ... probably can’t do it :(.

Laminated is two bits of glass stuck together sit thin plastic between. Look at the edge for a line down the middle.

Mine looks just like that if you try and look through it with polarised .sunnies on. Looks a bit like an old fashioned heated rear screen. Glasses off and it looks fine glasses on and it drives you Potts. If you get the chance, swap to a laminated as they’re much safer. Some breakdown policies won’t include sorting a screen and getting you home without one, always worth asking the question I reckons.

    Ozziedog,,,,,,,, enjoy Easter/ Ishtar.:)
