Smell of fuel since fitting dells (type 4)

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Dicky, Nov 7, 2013.

  1. As it says - no leaks apparent but getting a whif when stood. Oil checked and it doesnt smell of petrol. Should I really be fitting a fuel cut off to stop any flooding dues to sticky floats /needles etc? Thoughts?Ta.

  2. What fuel pump are you using dude?

  3. if there's no obvious leaks from anywhere, like unions, float bowl gasket etc. then you could tr putting another gasket under the fuel pump and see if it improves

  4. It's a type 4

  5. @Dicky ....did you reset/check the float heights? From what I remember, you are supposed to factor in the thickness of the gasket....

  6. Havent touched them at all!

A friend could smell fuel no obvious sign of a leak but once he moved a pipe fuel started peeing out.... Pipes were cracked just could see it.

    Just a thought.

Mines smells of petrol when stood for a while, I decided it was the breather pipes connected to the air filter. The filters I have don't stop fuel vapour/smells. I've never checked my float levels, let me know how you get on, mine may need looking at!

Mine also smells of fuel when stood, i think it's just a dell thing coz there's no leaks anywhere

  11. Think you're onto something there with the breather set up....
When people turn their engine off, do they let it idle for a bit, or just bin the ignition?
Also, if you fitted a fuel cut off solenoid on a switch in the dash, you could bin the switch and run the float bowl dry....

I,ve had dells for a few years now but never had fuel smell. (DRLA's type 4 motor, Facet electric pump.)

  13. Chances are, if it's running Ok the float levels will be right....they're quite touchy...it's normally the first thing you'd check/reset with a new carb straight out of the box

  14. Alll pipes are new! Will see how I get on. Interesting that others have similar issue so wont bother too much!

  15. That's the spirit...:D

  16. Float level and / or wear in the float valve.

  17. Did you get it on the rolling road Dicky?

In light of @vinnyboy's post I might get my float levels checked and the float valves. I've always had a petrol smell lingering and have changed all the usual suspects, breather pipes, filler neck and filler hose. If the float level is wrong I assume the extra fuel will trickle down the carb and into the engine.

  19. Yes....if it's way out and the float valves are worn....it's more to do with poor running generally:
    from another site:
The carb has a float bowl. The float opens the valve to let fuel in when the float drops, or stop the fuel when there is enough in the bowl. There is also a little tube (like a tiny straw) that is at the top of the fuel level in the bowl. The intake vacuum sucks through the little tube and pulls fuel into the combustion chamber. If the float lets the fuel level get too high, then the little tube is submerged and will suck way too much fuel into the engine, if the float is set to maintain the fuel level in the bowl too low then the bottom of the tube is above the fuel and can't suck enough fuel into it and will not run properly. Hope this helps.

I may be ok then, I've had it on a rolling road and that would have picked up any over/under fuelling. It runs great, it just smells a bit, I have started leaving the engine lid up when we sleep in it as this seems to cure the problem of fumes getting into the van. It's strange as it doesn't really smell when you stick your head in the engine bay, although the filters do stink when your up close. The smell tends to build up inside the back of the van, maybe someone fixed my RnR bed to the tank:oops:. I'll investigate further when I get time.
