I’ve just heard 5 have handed themselves into the police, I was thinking, what can they charge them with?

Not sure what they’ll charge them with but I imagine the guilty parties know full well they will need police protection for a while at least.

  6. Section 5 public order.....

Section 5 makes it an offence to use “threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, or disorderly behaviour” or to display “any writing, sign or other visible representation which is threatening, abusive or insulting” within the hearing or sight of a person “likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress

  7. There has always been stupid, ignorant people in our society - one of the very few positives of social media is that their actions are now out there for all to see - including the police and the CPS......

I'm not sure what's worse. Is it that society has bred people that are twisted enough to do something like this in private. or that society has bred people thick enough to film it, upload it to the internet and think that nothing will happen or be said?

  10. unfortunately there are some people stupid enough, lots of people make significant errors of judgement, anyone remember when Prince Harry wore the Nazi uniform to a fancy dress party

 Oops! That was me getting carried away with myself!! The cliffs bit. Obviously I wouldn’t advocate such measures. I think giving them community service working withGrenfell survivors until it sank in how offensive their actions were.

So whilst the subject matters are very different, how is this much different to the burning effigies of Mrs Thatcher?

Please note, I'm Welsh, and come from a mining family.....don't need a lesson in Thatchers actions, I'm also well aware of the Grenfell disaster and what that actually means.

All I'm asking is what's the difference between a bunch of plainly thick tw@ts making a vile joke, and a bunch of politically motivated 'intellectuals' doing the same thing to someone that ended their life as a confused old lady.

I'd nominate both are pretty abhorrent and indefensible yet no arrests were made on the thatcher one as that's deemed, correctly, free speech.

As should this be. Free speech comes at that price I guess.

Not sure they equate @Moons. Had Mrs Thatcher met her end being burnt to death in a building fire then it’s the same thing, but to a certain extent, she had a legacy that deeply divided people, plus she was a public figure so a certain amount of public flack, distasteful or otherwise, goes with the territory doesn’t it? The people who died in Grenfell tower were not public figures.

  15. My guess is they won’t be charged if this was filmed at one of their homes.

Public order offences by their very nature must take place in public. They will argue that this was a private event and they were not aware it was being filmed by a third party. Therefore there was no intent to cause offence. Therefore you’ll have a job getting a public order offence to stick. My guess is they’ll receive a caution at worse or perhaps just a formal warning.

Proper scumbags. I hope the cps find a way to throw the book at them. But I doubt it.

  16. this was also racist, wouldn't that come into it or hate speech?

As stated, I inderstand the back stories.

I'm talking about the act and any crime identified as the outcome.

I'm simply asserting that I imagine they are the same thing...abhorrent but free speech.

I'm no fan of Thatcher but millions and millions of people voted for her over a number of general elections....thus she can't have been universally hated.

If one is now seen as a criminal act, then it has ramifications for the other.

Unfortunately it’s the press whipping up the masses trying to make a story again.

I don’t agree with what that did but how many bad taste jokes were going around after this tragical event along with the 9-11 ones and ones following the challenger disaster etc

Do they go round arresting the people that say these including some of the bad taste ones that have been writing on this forum.

I think as a nation we are currently all looking to be to easily offended so we can shout about it.

It's a complex situation, I'm a product of the 60's and 70's and an awful lot of things that "upset", "offend" and "distress" people were common place back then. I often think that free speech is fine as long as it doesn't get on the wrong side of the "Twitter army".

Unfortunately most of them will see nothing wrong with anything done or said against Trump, Thatcher, May, Johnson, our national flag, people with money or indeed any white middle aged man.

The problem is they seem to scour every single news item, Facebook post, Tweet etc to try and find offence. The latest thing they get all bothered about is "cultural appropriation" whereby a white women is dragged through the coals for braiding her hair as its not her "culture", perfectly ok for a black woman to straighten her hair and dye it blond though.

    Just saying............
