Rise of the T5 !!

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by lumberjack, Aug 22, 2016.

  1. I think now a days life has changed and you can use a T5/6 for everything with good mpg and it drives like a car and looks better than most.

T2's are great but costly all round, limited mph, bad mpg. You need to love the classic old style to really want one.

  2. I find them, T4/T5 dull and boring. Which I guess is why the owners feel the need to paint them in daft colours?!
We had a young couple in a T4 camping with us lot at Skegvegas at the weekend. By Saturday afternoon they had to have the engine ticking over for half an hour (T4 owners seam to have a habit of this) then put the TV on:rolleyes:. We must of been a right boring lot:lol:
No doubt a T5 makes a great if not expensive camper but sorry its not for me. I like the excitment of driving and camping in a well sorted 40 year old camper. :D

  3. Im kind of on board with you tbh. Time will tell as to whether you keep the bay. Not a fan of large motorhomes. Thats still a camper really.

I guess the litmus test for T5's will be if in say 30 years time the kids that camp in them with their parents now will want one, or at least have fond memories.

If all the various owners they have now are the start of 30+ years of history for that van.

    Are on the never never
A must have accessory and all that
    So gawd knows how much
They will cost them in the end

I rather like the way you write this @pickle. I feel like I'm reading VW poetry :)

Its true, they are boring. I well remember how bored I was driving up to Scotland last summer. How boring it was to get good mpg the whole journey. So deadly dull flying up hills as if still on the flat. And don't get me started on the comfort, not just of me but my passengers. What a tiresome two weeks that was, getting to our destinations quickly, winding out the awning and getting a brew on as we pondered what activities we'd do and places we'd go, when by rights I should have spent that time with head in the engine bay or trying to get an internet connection so I could get onto the Mech tech section on here :)

  16. you beat me to that!

  17. From my childhood I can remember the family down the road having a VW camper van and being slightly envious.

I know loads of people who have borrowed loads, to buy T5s or in one case a Fiat Ducato camper thing their choice I suppose, just some of us prefer not to be that much in debt.

Haha! But no random nutters told you "these go forever mate" on a campsite.

A wise person on here once told me that Bays were fine as a hobby but no good for the longer trips involved in a holiday etc (or words to that effect). Now obviously there are plenty on TLB who do enjoy longer trips, the Daisy's for instance, or Sandybay. But for me personally, now, I don't have time to maintain this particular hobby any more, amongst all the other stuff that takes up my time. Same for a lot of people I imagine, some ar gifted mechanically, and some not, and some don't have the man/woman hours to devote to acquiring the "gift". When I was out and about in the T5 I didn't miss being waved at, I just enjoyed the journey. In the Bay I was often on edge, wondering, will I make it to my destination. I think so long as you can accept those uncertainties with owning and driving a bay, you'll be fine. Just not for me anymore.
