Quick question: N/S rear hub nut

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Stan, Apr 9, 2013.

  1. Just remind me please - its not set up to unscrew the other way is it?
Its on hard but I dont want to force it as I seem to remember the front wheel bearings have a reverse thread on O/S I think?
Got my iron persuader bar but need a lump hammer to shock it off , never removed this side since I had the van?

  3. I know they are normally up to some stupid 200Lb factory setting I never tighten them up so much afterwards!

  4. torque is set that high for a reason... Not really something you should be under tightening is your hub nuts!!

yup torque setting are there for a very good reason, not just to make it hard to undo

  6. I know but you dont need 200+ I've not had a wheel fall off yet or bearing go or seal leak yet ... :)

  7. Got this one from an apprentced VW grease monkey. Remove split pin and go for a 5 mile drive. DO NOT do 6 miles or it ll be crunchy scrape as he found out! I will say I ve not tried it myself, but I will when the need arises.
Alternately get a 4 foot length of steel and drill 2 holes towards one end to take the wheel studs. Place on said studs and tighten nuts. Thisll brace the hub against the ground and prevent it from turning

  8. Thanks Pony, good idea about the bar - even though wheels choked brakes on in gear etc etc it still moves the whole van.Not sure I will try the drive though!
I just wanted to be certain I am unscrewingf the right 'normal anticlockwise way'.
Otherwise its down to my mates garage and he can do it with a blow torch etc etc -

  10. I cant belive your advising people to drive without split pins fitted:eek:

  14. Damn thing will not shift no matter which way I move it. Garage mate will try it in the week for me, needs that hub off to adjust brakes (star adjuster siezed solid)and hopefully that is all it will need to pass its MOT. Fingers crossed, thanks for the advice btw

  15. they are only a fiver, drill two holes in the nut close to thead depth on a thin section and one wack with a cold chisel and shes undone

  16. Thanks mate yes I have in the past chiselled the buggers off but I was about 21 at the time and seemed to have more energy that I have this week (just started running again etc etc - probably not good for me as I have sod all strength left today! haahaa:)

  19. Sorry the lovely browser or your server is doing weird stuff online!

  20. Handbrake on, three foot breaker bar plus a bit of scaffold pole, and they're off. Grinder as a second option (watch the threads), but you'll still need the kit to do them up again.

    They will come off, honest.
