Good news!! * * well, for those who like a quality resto thread. I hope that furlough doesn’t have any ill effect on your long term employment or income, obviously!
Really substantial bits of kit! Proper heavy gauge tubing. I was surprised to see them turn up on a pallet but when you feel the weight of them I can see why. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yeap. I’m seeing the positive side of it. Me and another guy at my office have the same job role and he was furloughed for 6 months during the initial lockdown. Seemed only fair I took this one. The company are topping up the 20% on top of the 80% gov funds which is good and I’m confident I’ll still have a job to go back to. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Some pretty tricky repairs. The gutter on a beetle has a slight curve to it so I borrowed a shrinker to form the correct profile. And a small repair to the rear drip rail.
All of the O/S rear fender captive nuts needed replacing as a previous owner had simply drilled new holes through the old plates and fitted another nut. 3 down, 2 to go!
Fabricating some sections to repair the roof on the N/S. First up the section which sits inside the guttering, this needed a fair bit of work to get a nice fit. Followed by a small repair piece for the window aperture which needed a few runs through the shrinker to get the right curve. I just need to finish welding in the window repair tomorrow and give the inside of everything a coat of paint before I can weld the roof back on.
Inside of the roof painted and welded in today. Just need to grind the welds flush and knock the gutter lip over. A surprising amount of work went into repairing this section!
Front tube bumper trial fitted and mounts tack welded to the front beam. I’ll weld them properly when I tear down the chassis next week.
Next welding job is to make up some sub frames to mount the MX5 seats. The plan is to bolt the frames to the stock beetle runners on the floor pans so I can always revert to standard beetle seats if I want to.
Having access to a shrinker made this a much easier repair! The gutter and roof sections were quite enjoyable to make. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
One pair of seat sub frames to fit the MX5 seats to the bug. I ended up attaching them to the central hump at the front and to the floor pans in the rear. These seats are super comfy compared to the stock seats. Really enjoyed making these and got the welder dialed in just right.
Spent a few hours today trial fitting the rear engine cage. It’s a monster! Love the look (I’ve yet to cut off the rear valance). Then spent a fair bit of time having one more final fit of the doors to make sure I’m happy with the gaps before I split the pan and shell. What’s everyone’s opinion on the bus wing mirrors? I think they might look quite good on the Baja.
I reckon they’ll be in keeping once you have the big wheels and bolt on parts on. Are they based on the same threaded boss? Could be an easy change back if you don’t like them (unlike the 3” peeps I had on my bug)
